Pearl St. McHenry, Illinois 60050 Ph. 385-0700 Secretary Day At The p College Through talks by secretaries working in various jobs in this community, the Office Procedures class at McHenry County college is acquiring first hand information about what it's like out there in the world of business. Recently, three secretaries- Mrs . Barbara Day, Mrs. Arlene Ehle and Mrs. Ann Radloff-- spoke about their jobs. Mrs. Day, who is secretary to Alfred Roth, Crystal Lake city manager, described her work day. When she arrives at the rffice each morning, she finds out what happened at various meetings the previous evening so that she will be well in formed when handling visitors, telephone calls, and answering questions. Of particular interest was Mrs. Day's advice: "Itis better to IfelH&tttigh and do a job properly than to hurry and make mistakes. A secretary needs to be able todo more than type; tact and flexibility are important." Mrs. Ehle is secretary- bookkeeper for Dr. Michael Gannon, an orthodontist. She loves her job, saying, "Oui rffice has to be the happiest place there is to work because rf all the children coming in." After showing the class samples rf forms used for MRS. BARBARA DAY records and files, she explained her duties and stressed the importance of belonging to professional organizations, attending meetings on secretarial work, and keeping up with current practices. Mrs. Radloff, a doctor's assistant in the pediatric section rf the McHenry Medical Group, told the class about the pressures and responsibilities rf her type of work. After describing the new numerical, color-coded filing system, which is being implemented at the clinic to more easily locate records of the approximately 40,000 patients seen there during the course of a year, she said: "It's important that you like to meet and work with people, and you must be patient, calm and able to think clearly in emergency situations. You * must Tiave both empathy and ~ sympathy for the patients and their parents." Miss Jeannette Van Von- deren, Instructor in Secretarial Science, stated: "The im portance rf these talks lies in acquainting secretarial students with the respon sibilities and requirements rf various types rf offices. It is interesting to note that every speaker stresses adaptability as one of the most important traits rf a good secretary." MRS. ARLENE EHLE AND MRS. ANN RADLOFF Audubon Member Clarifies Facts On Local Swan The Plaindealer is ap preciative of a detailed letter from Mrs. Kenneth V. Fiske rf the McHenry county chapter rf the Illinois Audubon society in regard to recent pictures carried in the paper of a swan on the Fax river, near John- sburg. Mrs. Fiske expressed herself in this way:"We enjoyed the beautiful photos and fine coverage given our featured friend, the swan, on March 22. We always like to see attention given to the birds, especially in an effort to educate readers to the importance and beauty rf wildlife "We would like to set the record straight to ward off future confusion for interested readers who will soon be looking for, and finding, whistling swans in this area. "Your subject is a mute swan, 'a park variety' often raised and kept in larger estates for its beauty and an aid in algae control. This fellow undoubtedly wandered from 'home' -- they often do, just to confuse bird watchers. "Whistling swans migrate through here just about this time (March and April) almost always in blocks - large or small. Mute swans are usually loners, or at mo6t (in this area) two or three together. "A photographer can rarely get close enough to the wary whistling swans to get any type rf close-ups. To get close-ups like the magnificient ones rf Mr. Gaylor, you'd need a huge telephoto lens. "At present, whistling swans teve been reported on Mc- Cullom Lake (unverified), Bard lake (16 verified) and by now they're probably in Johnsburg area. With the dearth rf flooded fields this spring, they'll probably land on the bigger lakes". Mrs. Fiske expressed a hope that the Plaindealer would relav some rf this information because she was confident the initial article and photos "made quite an impression". She added that these swans are worth knowing a bit about. The chapter is particularly anxious to teach people the correct facts about the beautiful wild fowl in the area. (Editor's note: The Plain- dealer is most grateful to Mrs. Fiske for enlightening readers on photos which did, indeed, attract considerable notice).
