Old Man Winter, Please Go Away Rainbow trout have been stocked in several lakes and streams in the northern part of the state by the Illinois Department of Conservation. "The trout were provided to our Department for stocking by Federal hatcheries to be released on a 'put and take' basis," said Henry N. Barkhausen, Director of the Department. "They are provided on this basis because our state does not have streams suitable for trout to live the year around." The streams that have been stocked are Apple River in Apple River State Park, Jo Daviess County; Pine Creek, White Pines State Park, Ogle Countv Rock Creek, Kankakee River State Park, Kankakee County ; and the north fork of Kent Creek, Pages Park, near Rockford. The Belleau Wood and Axehead Lakes in the Cook County Forest Preserve have also been stocked with rainbow trout and are ready for fishermen. The Coleta Public Fishing Area, a state-managed facility in Whiteside County, has also been stocked with rainbow trout, but will not open to anglers until 5 a.m., Saturday, April 15. All areas stocked with trout by the Department are open for public fishing. "A major limiting factor for trout in Illinois streams is the lack of suitable habitat," said William Harth, supervisor of the'Division cf Fisheries. "If the fish are not caught before the heat of summer warms the waters to over 70 degrees, they will die. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recognizes this deficiency and therefore does not make larger numbers of trout available for stocking in Illinois." The limits in these stocked areas are eight trout per day, with no minimum size limit. Hcwever, in the Lake Michigan waters which come under Illinois jurisdiction, there is a limit of five trout and-or salmon with a 10-inch minimum length limit. By Fred Kusch The cold winter winds snow and rain have done nothing to enhance the beginning of spring sports at MCHS this spring. Warrior golfers, tennis players, baseballers and trackmen have had a most difficult time practicing much less playing in competition. However, the weatherman predicts spring will become a reality as changes in the weather can be seen for the coming week. If the weathermen are right the Orange and Black teams will swing into action this week as the baseball team meets Elgin Larkin Monday, Lake Zurich Tuesday, and Batavia Satur day . All games will be played at McQacken Field. If the links dry up, Chuck Ouda's golfers will meet Grant and St. Ed wards Tuesday and Grayslake FYiday at the McHenry Country Club. Walt Scott's thinclads will meet Crown H S. at home Tuesday and North Chicago and Woodstock at North Chicago on Thursday. Finally Gary Gray's «Racket men" will face Woodstock there Tuesday and meet Gary Grove at home Friday. All this competition depends (xi the weatherman, hopefully Harry Volkman, John Coleman and Jerry Peterson will be right and "Old Man Winter" will really go away for good.
