The citation read: "This award may seem unusual but the play is unusual. Its effect on the stage promises to be con siderable, because musical plays are always popular and by injecting satire and point into them, a very large public is reached." "Of Thee I Sing" is being presented April 27, 28, 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. in the McHenry high school West campus auditorium. The play is being organised by the combined efforts of the McHenry West Side Players and the McHenry Music department. The above citation is one of the reasons the play was chosen but there are many more. The play was written in 1931 by Morrie Ryskind and George S. Kaufman with music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin In the year 1931, Washington, D C was a stuffy place filled with sometimes dull, sometimes self-righteous politicians and a musty legislature that failed to cope with the grim realities of a major economic depression. The times were ripe for dissection by a satirical scalpel. Kaufman, Ryskind and the Gershwins handled that scalpel with the skill and sensitivity of a master surgeon. Another way to judge the quality of a play is to look at the comments of the critics of the time. In this case, the critics raved George Jean Nathan called it a "landmark in American satirical musical comedy." H.T. Parker of Bos ton considered it "one erf the drollest musical operettas of all time." Brooks Atkinson thought it was "funnier than the governmentand not nearly so dangerous." This is why the first staging cf the play ran for 441 con secutive performances. "Of Thee I Sing" has both a serious side and a comical side. It is an enjoyable play, both to do and to see, and can be en joyed by people of all ages. The public is invited to attend. >>' . s iv .. The "17-year-locust" is really a cicada!
