Home Burglar Alarms Practical Investment Now that home improve ment time has rolled around once again, increasing num bers of homeowners will be adding extra rooms, replacing weather-worn siding and trim, and sprucing up dull interiors with fresh paint and wallpaper. For many wise homeown ers, home improvement time will also be the time to add an effective burglar alarm system. With intrusions and burglaries becoming more frequent, a quality alarm system is a practical invest ment that can pay off in added protection and peace of mind. Home burglar alarm sys tems are available in a wide range of types and in a price scale that generally conforms to the quality and perform ance of the individual sys tems. Installations can range from a simple appliance-type alarm, which can be installed directly by the homeowner, to a professionally installed home security system that is custom-tailored to the needs of a specific home. Among the latter systems are complete burglar alarm installations made by ADT, the nation's largest supplier of electric protection services. An ADT home alarm sys tem is based on a central control unit measuring about a foot square and designed for neat, flush mounting in a hallway, near a door, or in some other convenient spot. To this control, any number sensors may be of remote connected. These burglar alarm sen sors can be magnetic con tacts which tell when doors and windows have been opened, sensitive floor mats which are hidden under car pets to detect the pressure of footsteps or even advanced ultrasonic units that are ca pable of sensing any move ment in their area of cover age. In most cases, an Installa tion in an average home can be completed within a short time, with little disruption of normal family routine. Wiring is concealed as far as possible, and all exposed sensor units for intrusion de tection have a neat, incon spicuous appearance that blends effectively with sur roundings. For the homeowner seeking the best form of protection, ADT offers central station security service in most areas of the country. For a monthly fee, the company will con nect a home burglar or fire alarm system to one of its 132 central stations. Thus, if an intrusion occurs, a signal is automatically transmitted by leased line to an ADT cen tral station which is manned 24-hours a day. Operators at the station receive the signal, which is coded to indicate either Are or intrusion, and take im mediate action to notify local police departments. This compactly-sized panel, mounted inside the home and close to an -outside door, is a pushbutton control for temporarily de activating an ADT residential burglar alarm system. By indicating the correct four-digit code on the panel, family members can open and close the door without tripping the alarm. Failure to indicate the correct code within a stipulated time period afler the door has been open, however, will cause the alarm to sound. Since the first V4" drill was made especially for the home user by Black and Decker in 1946, the growing popularity of doing-it-yourself has been accelerated "by ever increas ing power tool values for the consumer. Unlike most items, the price of your power tools has steadily declined as the quality has become better and better. According to the Power Tool Institute, approximately six million power tools were purchased in the United States in 1971. Available sta tistics show that 94% of tool buyers are home owners and surprisingly enough 36% are bought by women. Electric drills are the top seller of all power tools. Back in 1946, the home drill was deaigned as a single-speed unit and sold for $16.95. That original price would be ap proximately $35.00 in terms of today's dollars. Today, a safer, more powerful and dependable unit costs under $8.00. Modern drills for home use are available in V*", and Yi" sizes. Scrape, Sand, Polish Options include double in sulation, variable speed, and reversing action. With acces sories, a drill can scrape, sand, polish, grind, stir paint, and tighten and loosen screws and bolts. Jig saws are the second most popular power tool. In fact, about 72% of all power tool owners have one.- Cur rently jig saws are available in single, two and three speed models as well as variable- speed units. With a wide range of blades available, the jig saw can make straight or fancy cuts in wood, metal, plastic and other materials. The first jig saw for the home user was introduced by Black & Decker in 1952 for about $50.00, or approximate ly $75.00 in terms of today's dollars. The same company has recently introduced a more sophisticated and safer jig saw for $9.99. Other particularly popular power tools are finishing sanders and circular saws. Finishing sanders offer s t r a i g h t l i n e a c t i o n f o r smooth sanding and orbital action for fast material re moval. The ladies are parti cularly attracted to the fin ishing sander because of the growing popularity of furni ture and antique refinishlng At around $13.00, the sand er price is popular, too. Intro duced in 1952, the first finish ing sander for home use cost $72.00 in terms of today's dollars. Does Rugged Jobs The circular saw continues as the real workhorse of the home shop handling the most rugged cutting jobs. The first circular saw especially de signed for use around the home was introduced in 1949 at $93.00 in current dollars. Today Black & Decker mar kets a better model for under $20.00. The do-it-yourselfer has come a long way since the first home drill was intro duced over a quarter century ago. Today he enjoys un matched performance, safety and value in power tools that help him get a better job done more easily and in less time. Repeating design, color, tex ture, line, or form In a room creates movement. Rhythm permits the eye to move easily from one area of the room to another. Two patterns may be used together In one room if they are harmonious. This means they will have a common bond. But, use only one dominant pattern; two will fight for at tention.
