Commenting on the action by the board Gregory W. Streb, of Sherman Plumbing & Heating I n c . , C r y s t a l L a k e , a n d president of the Plumbing and H e a t i n g C o n t r a c t o r s association of Lake and McHenry counties, said, "The adoption of the state plumbing code is a major step in insuring the people of Lake and McHenry counties sound plumbing installations which are vital to the health of the people." "Responsible plumbing and heating contractors normally install plumbing in accordance with the code, but this will insure that all plumbing is done properly and in accordance with minimum standards as established by the state plumbing code," Streb added. No longer are people who suffer from an onslaught of a mental disorder considered to be afflicted with an incurable disease that can only be handled by sending them away to an institution for years or forever. This quiet revolution has brought a new age in our ap­ proach to and management of mental illness, an age made possible by new drugs and psychiatric treatments with community psychiatry and serv­ ices for people in their own communities. The families of victims of mental illness are affected by this new development almost as much as are the individuals who are afflicted. This is so because it means that the families can and must be helpful to these individuals both in the community and in their own homes. How can family members provide help at home? Some useful answers to this question are available from the National Association for Men­ tal Health. With chapters in all the States and many cities, the Association is set up to help people as the people's and the community's own organization. The Association points out, for example, several important reminders for relatives, such as: . . . Keep your promise* to the sick person. . . . Give him or her en­ couragement, respect, and affec­ tion, but don't fuss over, baby, or be demanding. . . . Let him or her know he has your support through thick and thin. . . . I f y o u h a v e a n y d o u b t s about what you should do, talk to the doctor, social worker, or some other professional person. The Association in your com­ munity can be helpful to you not only if you have a family member affected, but also if you want other information. It's a good idea to get in touch with your State or local asso­ ciation (look in the phone book or call your health department for information) if you need mental health help at any time. to honor McClory as well as to serve as one of the district meetings planned by the Illinois Federation of Republican Women to stimulate interest and par­ ticipation in the fall campaigns.
