roblems Increase With Growth PART II (Windwards Report) by the Rev. W.O. Hanner Pictured above are the three seminarians supported, in part, by the Diocese of Chicago. Leopold Baynes, from left, Guy Henderson and Augustine Joseph attend Codrington college, Barbados. Bishop Montgomery has notified the diocese that undesignated funds from the Lenten Mite Box offerings this spring will go toward the support of three seminarians during the year 1972-73. handy, the house immaculate. When the priest enters with the Blessed Sacrament and says, "Peace to this house and all who live in it," utter quiet reigns as our Lord comes to feed His sheep. How carefully another generation of priests have trained the people. 'The churches I have seen are of a former generation. Once there was true beauty in buildings, vestments and equipment. Now much is simply worn out and in disrepair. The plant is in poor shape. The Bishop does all he can but the task is over whelming. The two words •worn out' describes so much. Worn out in a good cause but not adequate for today's job. "The education of the young for church life is spotty. The dean's Confirmation classes are long - well and carefully prepared. The Sunday schools are small, inadequate, staffed by earnest, willing, but not always trained teachers. Not After I had been on St. Vin cent's for a month, the Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Cuthburt Woodroffee asked me to record my impressions for a small publication he uses to acquaint friends in England of the news d his diocese. What follows may or may not be factual. The Bishop asked for my "im pressions". So I have given my "impressions" that is, the way things looked to me after I had spent thirty days on St. Vin cent's. By this time I had been moved from St. James church, La you to St. Paul's Calliaqua. Here I remained during my period rf service. Mrs. Hanner was with me and helped the work in anyway she or I felt she could. IMPRESSIONS "Already I love the people. They are 95 percent or more black. There are all kinds of them - good, bad, industrious and lazy, but by and large they are friendly and interested in visitors who are interested in them. They will and have gone out d their way to be helpful. They are kind - not 100 percent of course but mostly. They are human beifigs with virtues, foibles, faults, failures and successes. Many are poor and work hard for their living, but there is also an alert, educated group who lead in getting things done. "Many families are proud of a number of children. The children I have seen are pretty and many are very well mannered. There are crowds d young in the streets. "Yesterday as I drove through a little mountain village, school let out - the streets were simply inundated with children - you could scarcely get through. As you stand at vantage points in Kingstown, houses climb up the hills to steeply situated sites. If there were easier places they could build, they would not be there. This adds up to the realization that there is . a growing, rapidly growing population. There will soon be werpopulation. How can this little isle be home for so many? "The Church has been at work here for many years. The older generation is well trained as Churchmen. If you take a sick Communion, a table is spread, a candle lighted, a glass of water nearby, a spoon County Urges Licensing Of All Area Dogs All owners or keepers of dogs in unincorporated areas of McHenry county are required by state law to take out a license annually for each dog owned, and pay the license fee provided for in these statutes. "So you come to the clergy. They are as dedicated as any diocesan group. Too many of us are here for too short a span. In many places the work is hard and long term, and young priests are needed. This is a place where, as always, good men are needed. I think they should be drawn as much as passible from local men. "No one should fault the Bishop or the clergy. They do all they can with what they have. There are problems here and they work hard to over come them. Help is needed - help in men, money and equipment. It is well to pray for this diocese, if to your prayers you add aid to make the in tercessions effec tua 1." (Editor's note: The Rev. One of the greatest Americans, Thomas Jefferson, was bom on the 13th in 1743 at Shad- well, Virginia. Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Inde pendence, served as Secretary of State and for eight years (1801-1808) as President. The 19th is Patriot's Day, in memory of the battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts; Emerson wrote that farmers here "fired the shot heard round the world." Texas remembers Jacinto Day, dating to the battle in 1836 on the 21st which avenged the massacre at the Alamo and won independence for Texas--which soon became a state hood. James Buchanan, 15th President, was born near Mercers- burg, Pennsylvania,on the 23rd in 1791. He served during the last four difficult years leading up to the Civil War and though much criticized for a time he is today recognized as having been a brilliant President. On the 24th in 1814 a British army captured and burned Washington. The 26th is Confederate Memorial Day in several Dixie states and the 27th is the birthday anniversary of the most famous general of the Union in the Civil War-U.S. Grant- also the 18th U.S. President (1869-1876). Grant was not a successful President but honest and big enough to admit it; he died of cancer four days after completing his memoirs at Mt McGregor, N.Y. He was bom at Point Pleasant, Ohio, in 1822. James Monroe, 5th President and remembered for the Monroe Doctrine, was bom on the 28th in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He fought in the Revolution (wounded at Trenton), served as Governor of Virginia, negotiated the Louisiana Purchase in Paris and obtained Florida from Spain, served eight years in the White House (1817-1824) andprovedto be one of the nation's great Chief Executives. Caution Camping Enthusiasts On New Registration Secretary of State John W. Lewis has cautioned camping enthusiasts who are owners of camping trailers and desire to register them under recent recreational vehicle provisions of the Illinois Vehicle code, that certain restrictions apply to this new registration classification. . The camping trailer, as well as motor vehicle campers, will be eligible fa- the recreation vehicle license plate for the new fiscal year, July l, 1972 to June 30, 1973. > Many owners who had1 previously registered such camping trailers for the present registration period by payment of a flat weight registration fee have been mailed preprinted renewal applications, Lewis said. These applications should be discarded and the new recreation vehicle application should be obtained and filed for the ensuing fiscal year, he advised. As with other recreational type vehicles, the camper trailer must be used ex clusively for recreational purposes and may not be used as a mobile home, house trailer or a not-for-hire vehicle PAGE 13-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 1972 £ CLOSE FRIENDS ... It would seem as if this German shepherd has a lot to worry about. After all, pythons are not usually the types to hold "wrap" sessions with. But there's really no pressure. The dog's owner is director of a West German traveling reptile show and python and dog are very close friends. Woodstock Fabrics Spring Sewing Specials 1241 N.
