The farmer only received $33.1 billion for his farm products. The marketing bill, which was mainly labor, was $68.5 billion. The ERS further breaks down marketing costs. In percentages they are: labor-47 percent, packaging~13 percent, transportation--7 percent, corporate profits after taxes--3 percent. Also included in the total marketing costs are: interest, repairs, etc. -- 3 percent; depreciation--3 per­ cent; rent-3 percent; ad­ vertising-^ percent; and other - -11 percent. On the average, Americans are not only eating more, but we eat better, than at any time in history. For example, in i960, Americans consumed 37 per­ cent d their beef as choice grade. By 1970, this figure had risen to 59 per cent. At the same time, consumption of utility,canner and cutter grade beef dropped from 18 to 13 percent, and consumption of standard and good grades of beef dropped from 13 to 8 percent and 28 to 16 percent, respectively . The percentage of prime beef consumed remained at 4 percent during the 10-year period.
