Baseball Warriors Win A Pair, Lose A Pair By Fred Kusch The Orange and Black baseball machine began a string of four games last Thursday by beating Wauconda 3-0. Tim Tonyan hurled the shutout, a 6 hitter, striking out 7 batters The pitching of the young hurler was most im portant since the Warrior of fense offered only 3 hits. The virtual impotence of the Warrior bats carried over to Saturday as the team traveled to Barrington where a tough Bronco squad swept a twin bill from MCHS. The Warriors could only muster 5 hits in the twin-bill as they lost by scores of 10-0 and 4-0. Wednesday evening however, the Warriors got their victory machine back on track again as they whipped the Crystal Lake Tigers 7-4. The Warriors backed Ron Miller's mound performance with 9 hits, 2 by John DeCicco. The big inning for the Warriors was the second when they pushed 4 runs across. Kevin Worm started on the mound for the Warriors. He had slight control problems and was relieved by Bob Staley who then yielded to Wayne Johnson in the 6th. The game was called at the end of 6 innings due to darkness. The Warriors continue their season with two non-conference battles this week against Grant and Wauconda. Send a note to Nancy Shulda, 512 W. Bald Knob Road -- and send money! All we know is what we hear. Chicago is a big city and a great sports center, but can't get a champion. The Bears, the Bulls and the Hawks all fell by the wayside. It looks like there is only one Chicago team that can turn the trick. ATTENTION WOMEN BOWLERS! The McHenry County Women's Bowling Association will enjoy a banquet May 10 at McHenry Country Club. Good entertainment, prize money - good time. A little bird tells us that McHenry gals are far behind other towns in registrations. Say it isn't so! McHenry should be No. 1. HOCKEY PLAYERS - See story in sports section about clean-up on Saturday. Everybody plays so everybody helps. The Men's 16" Softball League is organized and ready for action. First game is May 9. Jerry Miller will write reports for your sports page. A note from Frank Justen mentions the bad news about Earl Whiting's sudden death. In case you don't know, Earl was Marian Justen's brother. The note also says, "We are all well and busy planting corn and cotton and watching the men on the moon." The weatherman waved a damp and chilly checkered flag as the stock car races at the Lake Geneva Raceway were cancelled for the third time in four weeks of early season competition in the Sport of Speed by HATO Racing. The cancellation has brought about a new policy for the Saturday night competition which is figured to break the weatherman's winning streak. Effective with this Saturday night, April 29, when weather will not permit racing, Sunday Twilight races will be scheduled with time trials at 5 p.m. and racing starting at 6:30 p.m. The Sunday racing will not be held if weather permits the Saturday night racing. Later however, HATO Racing will announce regular Sunday night racing in addition to the Saturday night schedule. The Happy People In Town Are Those Who Read the McHENRY PLAINDEALER.. Cane's game called off last Friday and lost Monday. Last Friday, April 21, the Canes were beaten again by cold weather and wet grounds. The weather has offset the Canes a lot this year. I hope it warms up and stays that way so they can play good ball. Well anyway, April 24, the Canes hit the road down to Benet and got stoned by Benet, 8-1. The Canes had their bats working but they couldn't get it all together for a rally. The Fighting Canes will try to take another crack at hosting Marmion at the beautiful confines of Woodstock park on April 28. Then they hit the road again for two stops; one at St. Francis on May 1, and the other at I.C. on Mav 3 So come on out to the old ball yard and see baseball at its best, the "Fighting Canes" vs. Mar mion, April. 28.
