Lo cal officials associated with the Society for Information Display (SID) believe it sip- nals a new potential in class room instruction A demonstration during the final part of a lecture series connected a Glissom High School class to a Mar shall Center computer using an ordinary telephone line in the principal's office. Within a short period, students and instructors usfd a computer terminal station to pose algebra problems and received answers on a dis play screen which looks like a small television monitor. Several MSFC employees, members of SID, were among those involved in lec tures to enlighten students on the theory, technology, and methods used in com municating with the com puter The Huntsville Board of Education cooperated in per mitting the Grissom High School experiment MSFC participated in the com munity project to help show the application of space-age technology to an everyday situation. The compact computer ter minal such as that used in the test now costs several thousand dollars, but spokes men indicated that they might cost in the range of a few hundred dollars in the future. This will increase the probability of classroom use on a regular basis in many public schools. During the brief experi ment, a medium scale com puter provided the answers from the Marshall Center. The machine is regularly used in the development, of computer language and other research and development programs in connection with the space program. The class room experiment was staged to briefly demonstrate the use of remote terminals in the classroom environment. From Ruth Johnson, Clermont, Fla.: When I was a youngster wo lived in a suburb of Chicago known as Morton Park in Cicero. 1 knew who lived in every house in Morton Park, how many chil dren they had, and where their father worked We had only one church and it was the center of our social life. And how those folks could sing! A Mrs. Hall played the organ and she sang with such gusto! She had a strong bass voice and the congregation all joined in. Every- time we had a visiting preacher, he woul I remark about the won derful singing. We had a clubhouse with a big wide porch across the long side of it. We all gathered there on the 4th of July and on Election Day Every evening around five o'clock in the fall and winter, Arthur Rands would come around with a blow torch light and a little ladder on his shoulder to light the street lights. There were little lamp posts all over town. Now I am living way down here in Florida. I would love to see that old neighborhood again and ! know I would not recognize it. Ruth Richardson was my name when I lived back there. (Sand contributions to thit column to Tko Old Timor. te> 43», Frankfort, Ky. 40*01.)
