PHONE 312 1220 The polluted waters of the Fox river, between McHenry and Ottawa, may be causing significant incidence of can cerous tumors in fish, and possibly in humans, according to a team of Chicago-based researchers. In a paper prepared for delivery Saturday afternoon at the American Cancer Research association's national con vention in Boston, the in vestigators told of finding more than forty types of tumors in fish caught in the Fox river watershed during the past year. They also reported that "in the summer, spring and fall there is gross pollution in the Fox area," and that without exception organic compounds in the watershed "exceed the minimum state standards by over 100 percent." The investigators are Dr. Eric R. Brown and Lewis Keith of the Chicago Medical school; Dr. James J. Hazdra of the Illinois Benedictine College Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Dr. J.B.C. Kwapinski of the University of Manitoba Medical school. The team compared the Fox river and its tributaries -- which they called a "highly polluted watershed bordering at times on the appearance of an open sewer" - to a similar control watershed in the Lake of the Woods area of Western Ontario. They tested each watershed for minerals and organics, and attempted to correlate the findings to tumor incidence in the fish comjnon to both waters. According to the paper, up to 16 percent of the fish caught in the Fox riVer had tumors, compared to about 1 percent in the Canadian waters. The highest percentage of tumors were found in bottom feeding fish such as carp and suckers, Dr. Brown said, but game fish such as walleye, northern pike, bass and perch were also found to have a greater incidence of tumors than similar fish caught in Canada. In analyzing water samples takenjthroughout the year from the two areas, Dr. Hazdra found lead, mercury, calcium, phosphate, nitrate, cadmium, zinc and antimony in unsafe amounts in the Fox river waters, but not in the Canadian waters. Dr. Hazdra also found the river to be contaminated with unusually high fecal materials, cancer-producing compounds, herbicides, in s e c t i c i d e s , p h o s p h a t e s , nitrates, gasoline, ether and similar compounds. The water samples were taken about once a week at various sampling sites, from about one foot below the sur- MEN WANTED C A T T L E AND L I V E S T O C K B U Y E R S We want men in this area. The investigators found the greatest incidence of tumors in the late spring and summer, the same times when the greatest levels of pollutants were found in the waters. They note that the water south of McHenry is atrophic, or unable to support the normal development of most living organisms, while the water north of McHenry is essentially eutrophic, or rich in nutrients. Except in the winter, game fish do not enter the lower regions, where most cities are more than 100 years old and all are manufacturing communities. The investigators also point out that approximately 850,000 people live along the river "and in summer it is estimated that over 1,500,000 use its water for f i s h i n g , d r i n k i n g a n d recreation". In comparison the Western Ontario watershed studied has "similar stream and lake situation with a total population of less than 3,000 and no immediate industries draining therein." They conclude that while no definite proof of the cause of the high number of fish tumors can b e m a d e , t h e f a c t t h a t pollutants were not found in the Canadian water "might well suggest carcinogenic (cancer "producing) actions" by the"" chemicals in the Fox river. The team will continue its search for viruses in the tumors and will further define the nature of the chemical pollutants during the next year. AH, SPRING ...
