Serendipity Singers At West Campus The Serendipity Singers, presented by the McHenry County College Convocations committee, will be performing in concert at McHenry high school West gymnasium on Friday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. Emerging during the folk boom of 1963 complete with guitars and banjos, the Serendipity Singers were immediately categorized as folk or folk-rock. Actually, they were, and still are, presenting the music of the times. David L. Stanton, owner and manger of the group, says, "A constant talent search is conducted for young talented people ... The show fconstantly changes to keep up with the pace of the times and to maintain the Serendipity reputation of excellence in performance." Each member of the group is capable of doing a solo two- hour concert, and is a concert artist in his own right. Mem­ bers also have at least two ranges in their voice projec­ tion, and all play at least three different musical instruments as well as read music and act! A n o t h e r i m , p o r t a n t prerequisite of being a Serendipity Singer is that all members must write original songs and cemedy material. "We feel our music has a lot to say," comments David Stanton, "but there are some things which can be said better in other ways, so we integrate topical humor, sketches, etc., into the act." He says that appearance is very important to the Seren­ dipity image-which is why they may make as many as four costume .changes, each of a different color and style to suit the mood involved in that particular performance. And the entire wardrobe is designed to come alive with a totally new radiance under stage lights. It's hard to describe the Serendipity experience, because one of its qualities is its constant evolution. Ex­ perimentation with harmonic patterns and instrumentation occurs at nearly every rehearsal. Original and new material is constantly being tested in the act. You can catch the Serendipity act twice in one month without getting that "I've seen this before" feeling. But real berry connoisseurs are partial to the berry grown in their own area. So the top season for strawberry shortcake is the time of the native harvest. For a tender unusual biscuit shortcake use corn starch along with flour. Strawberry Shortcake 1 /2 cups sifted flour cup margarine V2 cup corn starch % cup milk 2 teaspoons baking powder '/2 pint heavy cream /2 teaspoon salt Strawberries, sweetened Sift together flour, corn starch, baking powder and salt into mixing bowl. Cut in margarine until coarse crumbs form. Mix in milk with fork just until dough forms. Gently knead on light­ ly floured surface J5 times Roll to inch thickness. Cut with floured 2 '4 inch biscuit cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake in a 450° F. (very hot* oven until li 'htly browned, 15 to 20 minutes Break biscuits apart while warm, but not hot. Whip the cream. Spoon cream on bottom halves. Top with half of berries. Cover with biscuit tops, more whipped cream and remaining strawberries. Makes 10 servings.
