PAGE 8-HAINDEALER-FRIDAY, MAY 12, 1972 The Bible Speaks CROSSWORD PUZZLE Vlrgfe L. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry COMMUNICATION WITH GOD The entire nation was stirred during the past few days as it learned of the death of one of the greatest Americans who ever lived. Many have said that our nation owes a tremendous debt to the life and work of J. Edgar Hoover Perhaps no one in recent years has worked longer nor more tirelessly for others than this one man. The life of J. Edgar Hoover is an illustrative example of how God speaks to mankind. God does not usually speak with an audible voice to his followers. There are a few examples in the Bible where God spoke in an audible voice, but these certainly were the ex ception. Jehovah speaks in basically three ways today. He speaks through the experiences of others. He speaks directly from within the believer and He speaks through His Word, the Holy Bible. There is no doubt but that God often spoke to individuals and even to the world through J. Edgar Hoover. Regardless of his religious affiliation, political or social involvement, he lent his influence for things of God, directed toward all men. He accepted as basic the truths of the Bible and encouraged others to follow. He statistically backed his advice to parents that children raised in church are less likely to get in trouble. God speaks from and to man; either in testimony or observation of another's life. Bat more directly, God speaks from the inner being of that person himself. Jesus said, "But I will send you the Comforter ~ U»e Holy Spirit; the source of all truth. He will come to you from the Rftthor and will tell you all about me" (John 15:26) Living Bible). Hie Holy Spirit is that indwelling Presence Who speaks to the hfcliever. His voice would be much like one's own conscience. In actual practice, it is often impossible to discern the source of the inner voice-that of one's conscience or that of God's Holy Spirit. One important principle is, when one is living in obedient sub mission to Jesus Christ, then the inner voice which gives rise to feelings of guilt, is not God's Holy Spirit but is the voice of con science. Because so often we can be misled by the lives and testimonies of others and because there is difficulty in discerning conscience and Holy Spirit, there must be one infallible voice from God That one infallible voice is God's Holy Word-the Bible. In order for us to have any confidence and assurance in our stand as Christians this one infallible word must be recognized. To illustrate: J. Edgar Hoover (or your neighbor, pastor, etc.) is or was an advocate of many of the principles of God. But if we observe them long enough we will find them fallible or in error in some area of life. Therefore we cannot put total confidence in the lives of others. Our parents, the society in which we live, and our close friends today, tend to make impressions upon us which causes our con science to speak to us. Therefore these impressions from an inner voice, perhaps mistaken for the voice of the Holy Spirit will often be in error. But going to the Bible, one finds God's unalterable and unfailing Word for all men through all the ages. Therefore, always verify the advice from others by Biblical teaching. Challenge the inner voice by seeking Biblical knowledge upon the situation in question, ftirough regular reading and study of the Bible, learn to apply its great truths to your personal life. These are God's lines of communication to you. ACROSS 1. Allot 5. up (joined forces) 11. Algerian port 12. Extract 13 Gay. spirited song 14. Still closed 15. Blot out 17. Monthly expense 18. There is no glory in being a mother unless one has learned how to prepare a child for Life. Nor is there any pride in motherhood unless one has done her utmost to share with her child the great spiritual heritage which is her own. People love to compliment us: "Just like her mother!" they say. If mothers through the centuries had been satisfied with that goal, our civilization would have stagnated in the days of the cave men. The mark of a devoted mother is her desire to make of her child even a finer person than she or her husband has become. And in this common aim she and her husband find their staunchest ally in the Church.
