May 18, at 8 p.m. The plays are performed by two students of West campus, Nancy Van Kanegan and Alex Thomas The students are both on the Total Independent Study program at school and have put the show together as a project for their Creative Dramatics class. Students participating in the Total Independent Study program are excused from attending class and use their time to work independently of the class, Nancy and Alex have chosen the plays that make up the program, developed a theme around them and supervised all the work that goes into a production, such as building set, lights and sound, publicity and costuming, with help and guidance from their drama teacher, Ron Zieglowsky. Through the production of this program ,the students will encompass all that is taught in the course and will learn it through actual experience. The three plays revolve around a theme concerning communication and its various tages of development. In the first play "A Storm is Breaking", by Jim Damico, the characters propose a view, idea or feeling to share with one another. The characters are a young businessman and a small boy. The man comes to meet the boy while he is king and accidentally comes close to killing an ant which the boy, for some reason, is intent on protecting. The second one-act "Wisp in the Wind" is by Jack Cun ningham. In the play, the characters share an idea but fail themselves because they lack the understanding to use their discoveries. The characters, a young man and a girl, meet in a deserted railway station one morning. The girl challenges the man by questioning him and he, in turn, challenges the girl. Through their questioning, the man comes to realize that he shares the same doubts as the girl and a solution seems possible but the girl runs away, leaving the man alone with his realization of his lacking the answer. In the last play "The Case of the Crushed Petunias," by Tennessee Williams, the characters share their feelings and together manage to find a truth. A young spinster has barricaded her house and also her heart behind a double row of petunias in order to free her heart and open her mind. Because these plays are done as a learning experience, the students would like to carry it one step further than the performance on stage. All audience members will be allowed to meet the students in a "green room" to be held in the cafeteria directly after the performance. This will allow the students and audience a chance to further share the experience of the play. The date again is May 18 at 8 p.m. at McHenry West campus auditorium. No admission will be charged. "A Storm is Breaking" by Jim Damico, is the first play in "Simple Notions", a program of one-act plays. A business man, played by Alex Thomas, looks on with a mixture of curiosity and scorn as a young boy, played by Nancy Van Kanegan, attempts to protect an ant from being crushed by passersby. a w "Wisp in the Wind" by Jack Cunningham. A young man, having talked for awhile with a strange girl in a railway station, comes to realize that he shares the same doubts and fears as her and blames her for exposing them to him.
