Stock Car Athletes Racing The Kenosha ( County Speedway in Wilmot,Wis., has in the past been referned to as the Indianapolis of Wisconsin. The name was originally at tached because it was then and still is today as the 1972 season opens, a "hot bed of auto racing". That and the fast pace of the cars in dirt track combat, are about as far as the similarity goes. Only 16 of the top qualified modifieds will race in the 30 lap feature race but everyone gets a chance in not only one of the five-10 lap heat races, but 24 more will race in the semi- feature with everyone else going in a rough and racey consolation race. The largest crowd of the season responded to the better weather at the Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night for the Four Star Feature stock car racing by Hato Racing Inc. They saw a special match race between rookie modified stock Car driver Stan Horton, Antioch, and Champion Late model driver, Ed Hoffman, Niles. They were paired up by their respective times in qualifying. Hoffman had fastest late model qualifying with a 17.78 while Horton turned a 17.80 in his group that placed him far down in the qualifying order. Horton won the special match race by less than a car length over Hoff man. Saturday May 20, the late models race in a 40 lap May championship and the modified stocks move to Sunday night racing for the remainder of the season. UNION GROVE One of the biggest drag racing meets of the year an nually is the 4 day "Olympics of Drag Racing" held over the Memorial Day weekend at Great Lakes Dragaway. It is truly a national meet in every sense of the word with the majority of the country's supercharged funny cars, nitro fuel dragsters, jet powered machines, wheelstanders and pro-stocks on hand. The best drivers from almost every state will be after the Lion's share of a guaranteed $70,000 cash purse. Drivers in all divisions will compete each day with a complete separate race program each day. This affords the racing fan a chance to see every kind of drag racing machine regardless of what day they attend the races. The drivers also have a better chance of winning or taking home more money in a 4 day meet. This year's meet is scheduled for May 26-27-28-29. The first two days, Friday and Saturday, are night races starting at 8:30 p.m. Sunday and Memorial Day (Monday) the races get under way at 2 p.m. Action In I Men's 16" Softball | by Jerry Miller The 1972 Men's 16" Softball League started out in high fashion last Tuesday night when Old Bridge defeated Parkview by a score of 13 to 4. W. Frantz, and R. Soda led Old Bridge with 4 and 3 hits respectively. T. Spasivich, who led the league in hitting last year, collected two doubles. In the second game of the night, Bavarian Haus defeated Hettermann's by a score of 15 to 8. B. Brennan collected 3 hits and drive in 5 runs. G. Snell backed him up by driving in 3 runs as he collected two hits, one of them a homer. On Thursday evening, McHenry Well and Pump defeated Jake's in a close game by a score of 12 to 11. T. Farr and B. Rowden each had 3 hits for Well and Pump. M. Conway led Jake's with 3 hits also. In the second game of the night, Carl's defeated Mer's Beach by a score of 18 to 11. J. Fino drove in 4 runs as he went 3 for 5 at the plate. T. Blake also had 3 hits for Carl's. In all Carl's collected 19 hits. Come out and see exciting men's league softball every Tues., and Thurs., night at 7:30 p.m. E. From Huron College in South Dakota, we learn that McHenry's Jim Heard, a sophomore, won a letter in basketball. Jim took conference honors, shooting field goals at a 59.5 per cent clip. He also took third in free throw shooting with a 79.5 mark. That's sharp shooting, Jim. Congratulations from your Plaindealer sports department. f PORTS OF CALL FOR TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE 21 J News { PFD REQUIREMENTS FOR BOATERS PFD is the abbreviation given to personal floatation devices, your cushions, vests, and life preservers. Other than yourself and the passengers on board, your PFD is the most important thing on your boat, for when all else fails, it's all you have left. Under the Federal Boating Act of 1971 all boats, regardless of propulsion, are required to carry at least one coast guard approved PFD on Board in good serviceable condition, and readily accessible for each person on board and every water skier being towed. When buying these devices be sure the tag states it is coast guard approved and > shows a number beginning with either 160. or E25 160. To be ser viceable the device must be completely intact, tear and puncture free. Today the accent is beginning to be placed, by BOAC at least, on cultural centers. Beginning June 3rd BOAC is launching a new tour program to five African cap itals, a tour which lasts twenty-two days and con centrates on museums, uni versities and development of these countries. The tour begins in Kam pala, Uganda--not far from Lake Victoria, source of the Nile. It then moves to Zam bia (Victoria Falls) and then to Tanzania. Next is Nairo bi, Kenya and the last stop i s E t h i o p i a , a c o u n t r y dating back 3.000 years and especially rich in the his tory of Christian civiliza tion. Ethiopia, by the way, is still ruled by the Lion of Judah, Emperor Haile Selas sie, who successfully sur vived dictator Benito Mus- solin's Italian invasion in the thirties! Air France has r e a l l y mad*' it easy--as their ads claini-- for the traveler to see western Europe. A new fare throughout May from New York to Paris and back is only $225. In addition, the airline will rent their passengers a car for a dol lar adayeach (minimum two persons) and mileage. The only catch is that one must remain at least 22 days, and not more than 45. But all the other silly discriminations, such as a g e , t h e r e q u i r e m e n t t o spend so much on "land ar rangements," etc., have been dropped. These fares, however, go up June 1st. Icelandic and Internation al Air Bahama still offer the cheapest fares to Eu- rope-the former flying from N e w Y o r k a n d t h e l a t t e r from Nassau but the new fares of the major carriers are bringing them much closer to a competative pos ture. Both Icelandic andlAB land in Luxembourg, a good central European location. Both offer group fares--and help place you in a group-- for less than $200 roundtrip-.
