Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry mNS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT "Is it really possible for one to sin against the Holy Spirit? was the earnest inquiry of a new convert to Christ's Lordship. The Bible savs it is not only possible but actual in every person's life. Just as every person sins against God (Romans 3:23), everyone has and does sin against His Holy Spirit. In actuality, because the Holy Spirit is contained within the Trinity, any sin is against all persons of the Holy Trinity. But in a unique sense, remembering the Holy Spirit is God's indwelling presence within the Christian's body, the Bible relates that a person can and does sin against the Holy Spirit. The non-Christian may sin against the Holy Spirit by resisting His impressions upon one's life (Acts 7:51). It is the work of God's Holy Spirit to bring us to God and His salvation (John 6:44). In personal experiences the Holy Spirit seeks to bring about Christ awareness in peoples' lives (John 16:13,14). When a person persists in denying God's personal dealing with them, when they will not allow Jesus Christ to become Lord in their lives, this constitutes the sin of resisting the Holy Spirit Another sin against the Holy Spirit, committed by non-believers is that of blaspheming the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31, 32). Jesus called this sin unforgivable. This sin is committed by the enemies of Jesus who would accuse Him of being in league with Satan. The person committing this sin would possess an understanding of the Scriptures but would attribute the works of Jesus to Satan's power. Christians may also sin against the Holy Spirit. A disciple of Jesus may grieve the Holy Spirit by not allowing Him to direct and control his life (Ephesians 4:30-32). Because the Holy Spirit is the divine God indwelling the human body, He must control the body in which He lives, (see 1 Corinthians 6:13 ff). Possessing the Holy Spirit within one's body and at the same time becoming involved in non-Christian attitudes would naturally grieve God's Holy Spirit. The believer may also quench the Holy Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 5:19). Quenching the Holy Spirit is simply the next step from grieving Him. To engage in non-Christian activity brings on the grieving of the Holy Spirit. To continue or persist in such misconduct would constitute turning a "deaf ear" to his personal direction. Another sin explicitly named in the Bible, also committed by the believer, is that of lying to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:1-11). It all seems to be somewhat progressive as one would quench or not listen to that small inner voice of the Holy Spirit. Soon one would be so confused concerning right and wrong, that the sin of lying to the Holy Spirit is committed (Isaiah 5:20). Yes, the Holy Spirit may be sinned against because He is God. The Sins mentioned here are no less grievous than those un­ derstood to be against God, the Father. But, with only one ex­ ception, all these sins are forgivable, and may be removed by claiming the promise of 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness". McHenry Girl Selected For Study In Mexico Annamay Keeney of McHenry is among eighteen Blackburn college students selected to study at the University of the Americas in Mexico next fall under a new "Semester in Mexico" program initiated by the college. Anna, a sophomore at Black­ burn majoring in art, was chosen by a faculty selection committee to be in the second group of Blackburn students to participate in the new program. They will undergo an in­ tensive tnree-week preparatory course on the Blackburn campus in Carlinville, 111., to early September, then travel to the University of the Americas, 80 miles east of Mexico City at Puebla, for the fall quarter there. Students will pay the normal Blackburn tuition, board and room charges for the semester. Because of low costs in Mexico, this will cover room, board tuition and transportation costs for their study at the University of the Americas. Although the new program is planned particularly for students majoring in Spanish to give them the experience of living in a Spanish speaking country and to augment their courses in Spanish literature, other Blackburn students are eligible to participate.
