Elm Street, the home of John Hale, at 8 p.m. sharp!! Evan though the meeting is billed as an association meeting, all residents of Holiday Hills, whether members or not, are en­ couraged to attend. The main item to be discussed is the hiring of a lawyer to take the necessary steps for obtaining township maintenance of the subdivision's roads. Getting roads is a main concern of all the residents, and pians to do this will be discussed. This will be the last subdivision meeting of all concerned residents prior to the June 6 township meeting, and it is most important that we gather all ideas and formulate our plans to proceed in ob­ taining roads. We have been waiting for a chance for roads for well over fifteen years in this subdivision, and now that we have a chance, don't let it slip by with flimsy excuses as to why you cannot attend this meeting. It is really that im­ portant. So mark your calen­ dar, Monday night, May 22, at 8 p.m. Also, reserve the night of June 6 to attend the township meeting. More information on this will be issued Monday night. MORE ASSOCIATION NEWS Volunteers are needed to run the road grader and to help get our roads in shape for the summer. So far, Tom and Jon Lamb, Jack White, and John Van Duyn have been doing the work, but there is much left to be done. If your area is in bad shape, perhaps YOU can volunteer your time, as well. Especially needed are men who are home during the daytime. The work is much easier done when traffic is less and the children are in school. Please contact John Van Duyn if you wish to learn and be checked out in running the grader. Try it - you'll like it! A comment on the dance: Those thirty to thirty-five of us who were at the Association dance last Saturday night had a very good time. The .--band played great Dixieland. But no amount of music could make up for the noise of the people who were not there. Perhaps it was a bad night, but it just doesn't seem right that the association, trying so hard to raise money to help get roads for all of us, has to lose over a hundred dollars on a so-called money making affair. Had just another twenty- five people come that evening, they could have at least come out even. How many of our residents sat home because they just didn't feel like coming! In years past, many many more people came to the dances. And now that the money is needed so desperately, nobody comes. Maybe you have some ideas on this. Come to the next association meeting, and let your opinions be heard. A BROWNIE-GO-ROUND This Sunday, May 2i; a BrOwnie-Go-Round will be held at Johnsburg elementary school. All Brownie troops from the McHenry area will be participating with craft displays and songs and skits. The mothers of all the Brownies have been invited. This func­ tion replaces the Mother- Daughter Tea of a few years ago. The time is 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Our Holiday Hills Troop 409 will be going, and we need all our Brownies there in force for our songs. So please, mothers, make a special effort to bring your daughter - no other family, please-to this function on Sunday afternoon. JUNIOR OLYMPICS HELD Hilltop school held their Junior Olympics last Saturday, in spite of the weather. In charge of this event, were two ladies from our subdivision, Linda Thietje and Cheri Hoglund. Also volunteering their time to assist in the running of the games were Jackie Carbone, Craig Stackhouse and Kenny and Evelyn Weber. Several qf the children from our subdivision took home prizes. They are Paula Carbone, second and third place; Karen Thiatfs, • first-fifth place; Cathi Hoglund - first and third; Ray Hoglund - first and second; Rita Rostad - second; and Todd Thennes. r A FISHING TRIP TO BE ENVIED Roger Thietje returned home last Sunday night following a fishing trip to Fremont, Wis. Roger and three of his friends, fished the Wolf River near Fremont, and found the fishing there unbelievably good. They claim to have caught more than 500 fish in one day. In fact, they say their hands were sore and blistered from reeling them all in. It may sound like a fish story, but Roger has all the filets in his freezer to prove it. While Rog was landing all those big ones, Linda was entertaining her mother, Mrs. Alice MacFarlane, for the weekend. Linda's mom had just returned from a trip to Las Vegas, and saw such celebrities as Wayne Newton, Tom Jones, Jerry Vale and Merv Griffin. APARTY TOCELEBRATE Little Julie Bartkus celebrated her sixth birthday with a party for many of her friends on Saturday, May 6. Several of the little girls from Holiday Hills attended. They were Kiki Hughes, Beth Goebel, Kim Johnson, Dawn Grether, Dawn Douglas and Lori Emmons. Following game playing, cake and ice cream were served. We do hope all of Julie's wishes come true for the neyt year. TRIP TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY Gar and Inez Young recently spent a very exciting weekend at the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Ky. They were guests of Dorothy and Don Berryman of Lafayette, Ind., who for many years have had four box seats. The Young seats were 25 feet from the finish line, so they were really in the midst of all the excitement. After being driven in a chauffeured car to Churchill Downs, they enjoyed an elegant buffet before the races. When all the high school bands struck up the familiar "My Old Kentucky Home", Inez states there were many tears shed, and the magic of this historic day was beginning to be felt. After the bets were placed, it seems as if Inez was the only one in their party to go along with the favorite, Reva Ridge, and she came out the winner. But for Clar, the disap­ pointment at not picking the winner for that race was offset by the fact that while placing his bet, he turned around and bumped into Maine's Senator Ed Muskie, also enjoying a day at the races. So all in all, it was really a royal weekend for the Youngs, and one that won't be forgotten for along time to come. ANOTHER BIRTHDAY PARTY Although he's a bit too young to have friends over for games, etc., Tommy Kellen, who was three years old on May 11, nevertheless enjoyed his party, celebrated on Mother's Day. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cook of Evanston, his maternal grandparents, were there, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kellen of Glenview and Veronica Kellen. His favorite present, a road grader, came from Great-Grandpa Joseph Zander, who came for the day from Glenview, also. Tommy blew out his three candles all in one breath, and we hope his wishes come true, too. OUR OWN BOWLING PRO Seems the past couple of weeks we've been bragging about our "women bowlers" and over on Hickory Street, there is one real nice guy who is practically a "Pro" on the lanes but not being a "bragger", we just happened to hear of his accomplishments and certainly feel it is well worth mentioning. Although Wally Karafa only bowls one night a week, he is a "Master" of that bowling ball and on May 6 at his bowling banquet, was awarded three trophies. Wally bowls in the Thursday night scratch league at the bowling alley in Island Lake and received a beautiful trophy for a high scratch series of 674. He also received a trophy for first place team and the third one was for the most age. Starting last fall, he was carrying a 180 average and boosted it to a 191. He also parries the second highest average in,the league, and this is^mighty line bowling. Another "Holiday Hiller" also bowls in this league and he too was awarded a trophy. Ken Carlson of Pine Street was given_the "sportmanship" award of which he can be very proud. Congratulations go out to both these fine men and know they will be looking forward to the starting of the bowling season next fall. DEBBIE WINS AGAIN At the rate this young lady's going, before long she will be able to cover a whole wall in her room with ribbons that she's won for her athletic ability. Two weeks ago, Debbie Mahon won a second place red ribbon in the shot put event at the Waukegan high school first annual invitational track meet. Last week, she came through with "flying colors" again and won a first place blue ribbon in the softball throw and a fourth place yellow ribbon in the shot put event. She threw that softball 192 feet and this is quite a record. Debbie is a member of the McHenry high school girls track team and they competed in the Libertyville high school track and field sports day which was held on Saturday, May 13, in Liber­ tyville. SCOTCH DOUBLES TOURNAMENT All the gals who bowled in the Thursday afternoon ladies league in Island Lake know Carrie Nylen as she is the secretary of our league. She is running a Scotch doubles tournament for couples only at the bowling alley in Cary, on Route 14 and invites any of us from Holiday Hills to join her. The tournament will run until June 4 and a small fee will be charged each couple. There will be four games bowled and the best scoreior three games will be used. For any of you who are not sure what Scotch Doubles means, one person throws the first ball and the other picks up the spare. This continues until the first strike is thrown and then they reverse their bowling procedure. It's really a lot of fun and very different, and a good time is promised all who bowl in this tournament. If interested, give Carrie a call at 1-312-DU1-1528 for your entrance application. CONDOLENCES Sudden death is a terrible shock to any family and this is what the Karafa family ex­ perienced this past week. On Wednesday night, May 10, Joyce's father, George Zitt, was suddenly stricken with a fatal heart attack. Funeral services were held on Satur­ day, May 13. CALLING ALL GIRLS Interest has been expressed by several of our young gals in the subdivision on the possibility of forming a 12 inch softball team. If enough girls are interested, there is a good possibility that such a team or teams could be formed. We are asking all girls who would like to play 12 inch softball to please contact either Tillie Williams at 385-8654 or Marge Connell at 385-3756 and sign up. If there is enough interest, these two mothers will be more than willing to help get the gals started A good field located in the subdivision would be needed for the girls to play on, so if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations, it would be very much appreciated if they too would give either Marge or Tillie a call. This shouldn't be too much of a problem with all the vacant lots in the area. Any other mothers interested in helping get a softball team started would be more than welcome and we'd also like to hear from them. GET-WELL WISHES Cheery get-well wishes are sent to Donna Kasprzyk who spent several days in McHenry hospital last week and also to Pam Bellon who was recently hospitalized. Tina Wytte of Pine Street is hobbling around with a broken toe and Joey Foreman received seven stitches on the back of his head due to an accident at school. Sincerely hope they are both feeling better now. Very special get-well wishes and prayers are being sent to Resurrection Hospital in Park Ridge this week where Marge Connell's mother, Mrs. Walter Schweik, underwent serious major surgery. While Grandma is in the hospital, Grandpa Sch­ weik is out here in Holiday Hills staying with Marge and all the kids are keeping him busy and trying to make his stay as pleasant as possible. WIZARD OF OZ The only way it could be described was "fantastic and beautiful" reports Girl Scout Leader Tillie Williams on their trip down to the Mill Run Theater on Saturday, May 13. Fifteen of our Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 478 went to see the "Wizard of Oz" and were completely thrilled. The sound effects and lighting were marvelous and with the beautiful revolving stage, everyone could see no matter where they sat. Mothers who helped drive the girls were Tillie Williams, Lil Goebel, Mimi DeWitt and Diane Rasbaugh and the scouts who enjoyed this delightful af­ ternoon were Patricia Goebel, Dale Williams, Robin Fullmer, Cindy Rasbaugh, Margie Wise, Lynette Borowski, Chris Szamlewski, Chrissy Connell, Diane Boettcher, Kelly Wegener, Pricilla Kasprzyk, Noreen DeWitt, Candy Gibb6, Lynn Kathon and Pam Hat­ field.
