The local area contractors held their annual spring dinner meeting at Elgin. The General Contractors association serves the Fox Valley towns of McHenry, Crystal Lake, Dundee, Carpentersville, Elgin, South Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia and Aurora. Their general office is located in Geneva. Defenders Recycling Booth At Fair Diddley Decorator waste baskets from ice cream containers and wallpaper ends; jumping jacks cut from gift wrapping paper; gift enclosure cards and tags from discarded Christmas rds; decorative wall plaques rom scrap lumber; note papers with coordinated en velopes from old magazines; soap from kitchen fats - what do all these have to do with ecology and the McHenry County Defenders? All are useful and attractive items made by Defender Recycling committee members from ordinary household materials that would otherwise be thrown away, and all will be on sale at their ecology booth at Fair Diddley, Woodstock Square, Sunday, May 21. The results of Lou Marchi's grinding operations are sure to be of special interest to gar deners. He has been finely chopping leaves and wood chips in his new shredding machine. Either product makes a good mulch or addition to compost; the chips can also be used for making rustic paths or in patio or play areas as ground cover. Even the packaging at the booth carries through the recycling theme. Anne Carroll's grated laundry soap (no phosphates!) will be sold by the pound in used IPSA plastic bags; Marchis are packaging their mulch in re-used salt bags; plant clippings have been potted in one-of-a-kind cotainers rescued from landfill. Also on sale will be tumblers cut from old bottles, floor mats woven from plastic bags, packages of recycled paper in assorted colors, spice bags sewed from odd bits of fabric, and candle holders from tin cans. These new-from-old hand crafts, suitable for your own, use or to give as gifts, can be purchased at next-to-nothing prices, but supplies are limited, so visit the booth early for best selection. "Hire A Veteran" National Poster Contest Planned A national poster contest for high school students with the theme "Hire a Veteran," has been announced by Donald E. Johnson, administrator of Veterans Affairs. Savings bonds will be awarded to local and state winners s throughout the country. The local and state competitions will eventually produce three national winners who will receive trips to the nation's capitol in October. Local and state veterans' groups and other service organizations will be asked to participate in the contest in their localities, Johnson said. The three national winners will be Johnson's personal guests at the annual Veterans' Day national observance at Arlington National cemetery Monday, Oct. 23. Johnson is chairman of the President's Veterans Day National com mittee. The national winners as VIPs will be treated to other awards and events while in Washington. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A boldly beautiful floral tank top designed only as Jane Colby knows how!
