Back in 1916, five years after the "500" was started, the president of the Indianapolis Speedway cut the distance to 300 miles because he felt a 500- mile race was too long to hold spectator interest!! REMINDER -- Our firemen are holding their annual dance Saturday night at the V.F.W. You will have fun. Neighbor Marji Ruth is a Cub fan. She spars with Randall Rodieck. He's a Sox fan. We know 'cause he came in to tell us so. A fellow in tattered clothes stopped and asked, "What do ya do with your old clothes?" "Wear 'em," was our reply. We can now refer to Mrs. LeRoy (Theresa) Conway as "Grandma." She stopped at our house to tell us about an 8^ pound boy born to Mike Con- ways this week. There is no more joyous bundle than a baby. Bill DeVres asked me and mine to sit at his table in the crowded Bimbo emporium - with one stipulation -- we couldn't mention the American League. We did real well, but nearly choked a couple of times. Somebody called the Plaindealer fo ask why the Mundelein Invitational wasn't in the Wednesday issue. So I Hear \ SPORTS EDITOR:. Well, 'twas this way. It wasn't typed, but the story was printed - easy to read. But, the results sheets! The typesetter couldn't decipher those and there wasn't time. So - we are having it typed and put together for this issue. If we get some of those names wrong just remember - we tried. Metro• Goldwyn Mayer presents AD an Curtis Production Metrocolor -AND- Starta 7:30 Out At 10:50 locked in a pitcher's duel through the first four innings with Salter leaving the game with a 1-0 lead. Lloyd Simon then took over on the mound for the Shamrocks and was the victim of his own wildness and some sloppy play and gave up three unearned runs in the fifth. McHenry pushed across one run in the seventh but still came up short. Both teams showed good pitching in the first game as each team could only get four hits. Salter also showed good control, striking out two and walking none. The second game was 0-0 through the first four innings, but in the McHenry half of the fifth McHenry broke the game open with six runs on five hits and two walks. The key blow was a two out three run double by Kasperzyk. In the sixth the Printers scored their only run on two walks, an error and a ground out. McHenry scored two more runs in the sixth on a walk, a triple by Krause, and a perfect safety squeeze by Wensch. The Shamrocks again showed good pitching in game two as Farr gave up two singles, struck out eight and walked four.
