THE INSPIRED WORD In several different places within the context of the Bible, it is either explicit or alluded to that this is a different type book. There are many good books. There are numerous writings of a moral nature. But through the centuries there have always been those who looked upon the Bible as being an unique book. These individuals have sought to apply the teachings of the Bible to their personal lives. Most who have made the application have found reinforcement for their faith in the nature of the Great Book. The Apostle Paul asserts, within the content of the Bible itself, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God..." (2 Timothy 3:16 KJV). The Apostle Peter says, "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." (2 Peter 1:21 KJV). Peter links the writing of Paul (a good portion of our New Testament) with other scripture. (1 Peter 3:16). Throughout the writings of the prophets there comes the repeated declaration, "The Word of the Lord (Jehovah) came unto me, saying..." (Ezekiel 6:1 KJV). Amos explains his message, "I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son...and the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, 'Go, prophecy unto my people Israel.' " (Amos 7:14, 15 KJV). The prophet Jeremiah was instructed by God, "...thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee, thou shalt speak." (Jeremiah 1:7 KJV;. Isaiah, the "Prince of Prophets" was directed, "Go, and tell this people," and there followed the explicit message to be conveyed. (Isaiah 6). What is meant by "the inspired Word?" By "inspiration" we mean that the Holy Spirit exerted His supernatural influence upon the writers of the Bible. The writings were inspired - not necessarily the writers. The Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21). Jesus Christ told his disciples that the coming Holy Spirit (John 16) would reveal to man His perfect will. Man is the instrument used by the Holy Spirit to write the Bible (2 Peter 1:21). Scholars hold differing views as to how this miracle came about but the result is the same. If one is to experience the fullness of the Christian life, it is the opinion of this author that this experience can only be evidenced when this approach to the Bible is taken. Most often the seeker holds onto too much of his own personal concepts and actually does little more than become his own god. By this approach to the Bible, that of total inspiration, one's god is outside himself and that divine being becomes Jehovah God. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for" doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness," (2 Timothy 3:16 KJV). CHURCH SERVICES It's pretty evident that we have toppled the little red schoolhouse. Ideas we had about economics, science, race and educa tion itself, have come and gone. New ideas are broaching the surface of life and thun dering over us. Campus unrest and street demonstrations make us reappraise old values and ideas. But one idea remains steadfast. It is the idea that God loves man and men, and that He cares about what happens to our lives. Are shouting television newscasts and bold headlines overwhelming you? Then you need an open mind and a steady faith. God's love is for you. Your church is where you find out about it. Try it next Sunday. It will help you grasp an old idea, even if it is a new one for you. Mount Hope Church United Methodist 1015 W. Broadway Pistakee Highlands Rev. Willis H.
