/ PARENTS B« sure your children art sufficiently mature to witness the intimate details EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ GOLF COACH Chuck Cvda presented the low gross golf award to Mike Bauer at the awards dinner. Mike was also a medalist winner in MCHS golf this year. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) June 3,1972 Dear "So I Hear", Boy are we glad to get rid of PHIL REGAN. Hope he wins more games for the Sox than he did for the Cubs. Yours in the true spirit of sportsmanship, Jerry Mijler Would you believe? We received post cards with the identical wording from: Clara K. Miller, Louise Miller, Carol Miller Hunt, Randy Miller and Paul Miller. Thanks to all you Millers for writing to "S.I.H." As you might suspect, we have secret plans for Phil 01' Boy. Maybe Chuck Tanner knows something that Leo Durocher hasn't found out. Don't hold your breath while waiting for an announcement. Dad, Barbara, Kevin and I. Forget the other 7 Cub fans in the family. Colleen Miller In case you don't know, Colleen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. "Hessie" Miller. Holy Hector! You have to live with seven Cub fans? Eat plenty and get plenty of fresh air to keep up your strength. And, keep thinking clearly, Colleen. & We have to "live " with a lot of Cub fans, but not all of them (just some) are in the same house. Now, hear this! More Millers. Dear Earl, Count us in as White Sox fans, We had made a vow not to mention Cub and Sox in this column. Blame it on the Millers. Another old rivalry comes to light next Sunday when the Johnsburg Tigers come to McHenry to play the Shamrocks. WOWIE! There used to be some great battles between teams from Johnsburg and McHenry. They played for keeps. Both teams are stronger than they were at the start of the season. They want you to go to the game Sunday afternoon and see for yourself. We told Walt Freund this week that Hoyt "Doctor" Wilhelm is no longer in baseball. Correction! The old (49 years old) "Doctor" pitched the ninth inning for the Dodgers Wed nesday night against the Cubs and had his old magic. Guess nobody told him that baseball is a young man's game. STUCK-UP A dweller in a large apart ment building dragged himself into his apartment all beat up and his agonized wife demanded to know what had been the trouble. "It's that big Irish janitor in this apartment building", the husband com plained. "He tried to tell me he has made love to every woman in this building but one." "Humpf," replied his wife, "I'll bet that's that stuck-up Mrs. Harrington on the fifth floor." 1972 NSC All Conference Baseball Team Selected IVOR JANCI (right) received the most valuable player award in tennis. It was held at Korpan's Landing boat house at 8 p.m. in Fox Lake. There were two very im portant news letters, read by John Covich Division VI Cap tain, that were sent by the Department of Transportation United States Coast Guard. The first was proposed regulations today which would require manufacturers of boat and associated equipment to guarantee that their products meet basic safety standards. The guarantee would take the form of a certification label for all boats and equipment subject to the standards, and a "hull identification number" (HIN) for each boat. In the label ad HIN, the manufacturer would tell the boatman and the Coast Guard when the boat or associated equipment was manufacture, by whom the product was manufactured, and, that all applicable Coast Guard standards were met on that date. The Coast Guard expects the first such standards to be published shortly, and will affect most craft under twenty feet. Detailed descriptions of the proposed regulations can be found in the Federal Register of April 22, 1972. The Federal Register can be obtained by writing to the Public Documents Department, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402. There is a charge of twenty cents per copy. The second letter was safe loading, safe powering, emergency flotation and capacity markings for recreational boats are the, subjects of proposed standards published today in the Federal Register by the U.S. Coast Guard. The standards, Mteveloped under the authority of the Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971, are aimed at reducing the number of drownings associated with recreational boating by ensuring that each boat meets a consistent minimum level of performance and that the boatman is provided information con cerning that limitation. The first proposed standard, safe loading, is primarily directed at the prevention of capsizings. The proposed regulations describing a boat's maximum capacity would apply to all conventional general purpose boats less than twenty feet in length, except sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and John Ulrich, First Prize winner in Jaycee's Fishing Derby. The McHenry Jaycee's an nounced the winners of their 2nd Annual Fishing Derby this week. First prize for the largest fish caught went to John Ulrich, age 8, who caught a 37/slb., channel cat. Needless to say, John was quite pleased with his catch which won him a fishing rod and reel outfit. Other prize winners were, Steve Christmann, James Wajs, Jeff Hansen, Danny Riggs, and Mark Scheider. This year the weather was very cooperative with sunny skies and warm temperatures. The Jaycees consider the project a great success with a turnout of some 40 kids and hope to see an even better; turnout next year. It takes more than eight minutes for the light of the sun to reach the earth. Raymond A. Pro, Div. VI Vice Captain, Wally Korpon and John J. Covich, Div. VI Captain, at U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Meeting. inflatable boats. Included in the "general purpose" category are monohull boats designed or intended to be propelled by oars, paddles, poles, mechanically driven water jets or submerged propellers. The standards would apply to boats whose hulls are begun after September 30 of this year. After the letters there was a announcemnt of those persons that passed the specialty course in Auxiliary Patrols, John Covich Div. VI Captain, Mary Beth Covich, Div. VI Secretary and Treasurer, Mel Pedersen Flotilla 6-5 Com mander, John Stauff Flotilla 6-3 Commander, Pearl Pedersen Flotilla 6-5 Vice Commander and Dean Kolthoff Flotilla 6-5 Public Relations Officer and Operations Officer. Later in the meeting John Corvich Div. VI Captain and Raymond Pro Div. VI Vice. Captain gave Wally and Aon Korpan a certificate award for letting Division III use their facilities. Also they awarded a certificate to E. Nelson for us0 of their KLYC facilities. After the meeting there was a beautiful buffet dinner. By Jerry Miller On Tuesday evening, May 30, Hettermann's destroyed McHenry County Well & Pump by a score of 18 to 2. R. Wakitsch hit his fourth and fifth home runs of the year, and was backed up by Dick and Wayne Hiller who had 3 hits apiece for Well and Pump. But if Well and Pump can get things together in their Infield, *V >T be g'\ing teams some trouble before the year is over. In the second game, Carl's beat Old Bridge by a score 16 to 15. M. Mecko had 4 hits for Carl's, and L. With 13 hits, good defense, and good pitching, the McHenry Shamrocks beat the Elgin Brewers, 18 to 4 in 7 in nings. McHenry scored at least one run in every inning and batted around the batting order in the 4th and 5th innings. Tim Farr and Steve George led the way with the bats, with Farr going 2 for 3 and getting 2 RBI's and George going 2 for 2 with 3 RBI's. * Tom Janik started the game, striking out 6 men cuid giving up only 2 hits and no walks. Steve Stahlman, the winning pitcher, gave up 5 hits walking 2, striking out 8, and picking off 2 men at first base. With the addition of a few new personnel and more ex perience and depth at each position, McHenry should be a contender for the league championship. So come out and give your team support when they face their arch rival - the Johnsburg Tigers this Sunday at 1:30 at A.P. Freund field behind the Admiral. BOX SCORE ab r h S.
