Joining the IAA as plaintiffs are 102 farmers, one in each Illinois county, representing all of the personal property taxpayers in the state. In McHenry county it is Ervin Walters of Hebron. The purpose of the legal action is to make certain there will be money available in the treasury of each county to make a refund to taxpayers if the United States Supreme court rules that the 1970 referendum ending the per sonal property tax on in dividuals is constitutional and that the personal property tax as to individuals was abolished as of Jan. 1, 1971. A motion to file a similar suit was filed by the association in the Illinois Supreme court May 8 and the court subsequently denied the IAA's motion, thus refusing to hear the suit. The U.S. Supreme court has agreed to hear the petition filed by the Illinois Attorney General arguing that the Illinois Supreme court erred in deciding that the 1970 referendum ending the per sonal property tax on fh- dividuals violated the U.S. Guettler's Service, Inc. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry "I just can't get anything from it", is often the comment heard concerning the personal reading of the Bible. Most of us have been discouraged at some time or another as we sought to gain un derstanding from the reading of a particular passage of the Bible. We, at such a time, can identify completely with the frustration of the Ethiopian eunuch when the evangelist Philip asked if he un derstood what he was reading. "How can I, except someone should guide me?", was the reply (Act 8:26 ff.). A great deal of helpcan be gained through the numerous modern translations available today. Roman Catholics and Protestants alike have sanctioned the reading of the Revised Standard Version and Good News New Testament (Today's English Version). Another popular help available is the Living Bible, which perhaps sheds more light on many scripture passages than any other translation. However, the Living Bible is more of a commentary or interpretation than a literal translation, and therefore should be studied in conjunction with one of the more literal translations of the Bible. The Amplified Bible is also helpful as the many shades of meaning of a particular passage are contained within the printed passage. Still, though one may have the best of translations available; though he may sit under the most skilled and leaTned of teachers, understanding will be incomplete without an added ingredient. Nehemiah recorded of God, "Thou (God) gavest also thy good (Holy) Spirit to instruct them..." (Nehemiah 9:20 KJV). The Bible teaches that it is futile to attempt to gain the fullness of meaning contained in the teachings of the Scriptures apart from the direct guidance of God's Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul instructs the Corinthian Christians, "the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV). Paul says it is impossible for the nop spiritual man to understand the teachings of God. This concept is in keeping with the statement of Jesus, "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you". (John 14*26 KJV). The Bible teaches that this help is available for anyone who wishes it. Jesus spoke of being "born from above" (John 3). This is a "spiritual birth" or a birth "in the spirit". He speaks of the Father giving the Holy Spirit to all who will ask him. (Luke 11:13). The conclusion then, concerning meaningful study of the scripture is found in 1 John 2:27. "But the anointing (Holy Spirit) which ye have received of him (God, the Father) abideth in you, and ye need not any man teach you; but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him". 1Rfoe*&tde TZetcUl Outlet 1402 NORTH RIVERSIDE DRIVE McHENRY, ILLINOIS Wonder Lake Bible Church Box 2 - Phone 653-7961 Rev.
