Here & There In BUSINESS Drycleaners Applaud FTI Label Ruling Drycleaners, through their national association, the In ternational Fabricare Institute, applaud the Federal Trade commission rule requiring that labels sewn into garments give care instructions. They feel the consumer is entitled to have "full information", as the FTC has prescribed, though some labels may not tell the whole story, says IFI. Labels that provide home washing in structions and omit drycleaning information will fall short of that, because it is generally accepted that what is labeled washable is also drycleanable unless the label says it's not. Drycleaning solvent is far easier on cloth fabrics than water. It gets out oily soils much more readily than washing can. Polyesters and other modem shape-retentive fabrics are especially responsive to good drycleaning processes, and drycleaners welcome them. It is a rare item of clothing which should not be drycleaned; so after the labeling rule takes effect July 3, the IFI assures consumers that unless the label warns against drycleaning, it is safe, and usually preferable in terms of longer fabric life, to have the garment drycleaned, even though it may also be washable and may have been previously washed one or more times. Working wives and busy home makers should find this reassurance welcome, says IFI, since what drycleaners sell is not just fabric care expertise but also time away from home chores.
