You can rotary hoe soybeans from preemergence to a height of at least five inches. Rotary hoeing soybeans breaks any crust on die ground and kills most of the weed seedlings. In case your herbicide isn't working, the rotary hoe will incorporate the herbicide better. Don't worry about the soybeans that a rotary hoe digs out. University of Illinois research sfrows that you can lose five to ten percent of your soybean population by rotary hoeing and still have the same or even better yield. Speeds of nine to eleven miles per hour are very good for rotary hoeing. WORMS EATING PINES Sawfly larvae, inch worms, caterpillars or whatever you want to call them are eatinK the i Service This column of questions and answers on the President's Economic Stabilization Program is provided by the local office of the U.S. Internal revenue Service and is published as a public service. The column answers questions most frequently asked about wages and prices. Q. Will the Internal Revenue Service issue a notice of violation to a landlord who fails to abide by the notice requirements of the rent regulations, even where the rait to be charged is lower than that permitted by the regulations? A. Yes. The IRS will issue a notice of violation to landlords who . violate the notice requirements, even where the rait charged would otherwise be permitted by the rent regulations. Q. My landlord sent me a brief letter announcing a rent increase. Isn't he required by Stabilization regulations to furnish me with more in formation than that? A. Yes. Before raising your rent, your landlord must rive you a written notice containing the following information: (l) the amount of monthly rent before and after the proposed increase; (2) the percentage increase and dollar amount of the proposed increase; (3) the effective date of the proposed increase; (4) the amount of the proposed increase attributable to capital improvements, state and local real estate taxes, and state and local fees, levies and charges for municipal services, and any increase allowed under the 2Vt percent rule; (5) the base rent and an explanation of the manner in which it was determined, including iden tification of the units involved and dates and amounts of transactions where applicable; and f8) the method of com putation of the proposed in crease. In addition, the letter must include statements on the right of the tenant to examine the landlord's records documen ting the increase and to meet with the landlord to discuss it, as well as a declaration by the landlord that the facts in the letter are true and that the increase is not in violation of Economic Stabilization regulations. The exact contents of these statements appear in the rent regulations. Q. Now that small businesses have been exempted from controls, can my doctor, who employs only a few people, raise his fees without regard to the price regulatioiM? A. No. the Trie small business exemption, which exempts from controls certain firms with 60 or fewer employees, does not apply to health service and construction industries or landlords. Q. Can the Pay board, in considering the first year in crease in a contract, also rule on the validity of the second and third year increases and order a reduction? A. Yes. While normally the board is concerned only with increases occurring in the first control year, in circumstances where it appears that the second and third year increases are in anticipation that controls will be lifted by the second or third year of the contract and are so large as to constitute an attempt to compensate for wages reduced by the Pay board in the first year, the Board has authority to rule on ths appropriateness of such increases. needles off of pine trees, voracious worms can pretty well defoliate pine trees in several weeks. Two chemicals that are quite safe to use are carbaryl (Sevin) and malathion. Use two tablespoons of Sevin per gallon of water or one pound per 50 gallon of water as a spray. You can also use two teaspoons of malathion pa- gallon of water or one pint per 50 gallons of water as a spray. PESTICIDE CONTAINERS You should rinse, drain and destroy all of your pesticide containers today, if you have not already done it. Tomorrow may be too late if it causes the death of one person. For best results the container should be rinsed 3 times, allowing 30 seconds for draining after each rinse. This procedure cuts down the potential hazard to the en- virompent, to your family, livestock and pets by more than 1,000 fold. Pesticide containers should not be reused. Simply crush and bury the containers or take them to the scrap pile for recycling after you have thoroughly rinsed them. FAMILY CAMPING Families looking for a relaxing vacation that is dif ferent should try an Extension family camp in 1972. Weekends and full week camping sessions are scheduled at two beautiful 4-H camp sites in northern Illinois. Camp Shaw-waw-nas- see is located near Kankakee State park, Kankakee county. Camp White Eagle is located near Adeline in Ogle county. Both camps are within a two- hour drive of most family homes. What makes the family camps different is that food and cabins are provided, giving Moms and Dads an op portunity to enjoy and par ticipate in activities with the family. Supervised recreation and swimming is provided along with a chance for families to do just what they want, hiking, fishing, rock- hopping, or just getting acquainted and relaxing. The camping program is actually planned and run by the cam pers themselves. Dates for the camping periods are weekend of July 14, 15, 16 at White Eagle and two weekends July 14, 15, 16 and Aug. 1,12,13 and a full week of July 24,-28 at Shaw-waw-nas- cop I>vv. Extension Offices in all northern Illinois counties have applications. Families are advised to decide soon because camp6 are filled on a first come, first served basis. McHenry county families should call 815-338-3737 or 338- 4747 for more information and reservations. POOR SOYBEAN EMERGENCE Soybeans are emerging poorly in some areas. And in SECTION 2-PAGE 7-WEDNF*>AY. JUNE 21. 1972 many cases the problem seems to be poor quality or damaged seed. Soybean seed that is injured by machinery at harvest, during processing or during planting may not emerge well. Seeds that are too dry or too wet may be split or cracked or may have other wounds. Seedling' growth is slow - especially in cool, wet soil. Seed rot and damping-off organisms, such as Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and others, readily infect seeds and seedlings through wound areas. The result is a thin stand or even large gaps or areas where there are no plants. -5» 3 S3 HANDLE GASOLINE SAFELY Improper storage and handling are responsible for most accidents with gasoline kept around the house for power mowers or boats. Don't store gasoline in glass or plastic containers. Glass containers break easily when dropped, and gasoline can dissolve plastic. In either case, the risk of fire is great. The safest way to store gasoline is in a good quality safety can made of heavy metal. The can should have a spring-locked lid that closes automatically to prevent escape of gasoline or fumes if you drop the can. SPIDER MITES Spider mites have hatched on evergreens , e spec ia l ly junipers. Such shrubs should be watched closely for yellowing or browning of the foliage. An easy way to detect the presence of these mites is to hold a sheet of white paper under a branch and vigorously tap it. Watch for small specks that will crawl slowly on the paper. For treatment, use dicfol (Kelthane). It is strictly a miticide. Follow the directions on the label for preparing the spray mixture. JOINS HOSPITAL - Dr. S.L. Ask a child what his favorite season is, and hell usually say summer. School is out, but that's only one of the reasons children and most people love summer. Summer is a time when we are close to nature and when we should be closer to God. In the summer, somehow, it is easier to break down the barriers between people. Life isn't as for mal as it seems during the colder winter months. We are more open to exciting events. But are we as open with God as we are with our neighbors? God is easy to ap proach, even in summer. He asks so little of us, yet gives abun dantly to us. Summertime means picnics and fun to many people. It should also give us time to say a word of thanks for these wonders of God's creation that we so freely use and enjoy. A prayer of thanks takes but a few moments. Why not try it right now?
