If the White Sox are ever gonna win the pennant, Please don't let them play away from home. Sincerely, Leo D. Leo D ? Why the heck didn't you sign your last name? You have a great idea. The only trouble is that the schedule makers won't cooperate. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ But, things are changing. At this writing the Sox are .500 on their present road trip. The D. Yankees didn't treat our team with much respect. We are going up to Milwaukee Wednesday, in the land of bratwurst and beverage, to see the Sox win a game. Thanks to Jack Yegge, via Marie, we have some good seats reserved. If the Sox win, as per our plan, we will return in a day or two. If they lose, we may tour the Badger State and try to figure out what hap pened. Father's Day was just dandy except for sitting in the sun too long without a hat. Had a red bald head on Monday. Hope we don't lose our hair when that skin peels. On to Milwaukee for what we like to call a much needed rest? It will also be a rest for you dear readers until next week. are in another article elsewhere in the paper (1 hope the society page) for Friday, June 23rd We always enjoy reading your column and the kind words you have for our dinners. Thank-you Mrs. Art Christopher Dear Mrs. Christopher: Your letter is so nice, we decided to print it. You can bet McHenry will be well represented. "Governor Ogilvie will speak to 500 to 800 regional winners of the Jaycee- sponsored preliminary track meets, as well as chaperons, guests and area residents who attend." Crystal Lake's local Junior Sports Jamboree was held June 3 at Metcalf field. The state meet will also be held at the Crystal Lake high school site Saturday, Aug. 19. "We hope track and field enthusiasts will attend both the colorful opening ceremonies on Friday night and the track and field meet the next day. Some of the top 10-15 year - olds in the state will be competing in dashes, relays, jumps and baseball throws. "The meet will be professionally run by the Northern Illinois Track Coaches association. Elec tronic timing equipment will be introduced for the first time in McHenry county. "Prior to the opening ceremonies, a torch relay will be run from Joliet to Crystal Lake by 85-95 cross country runners. The torch will be used to light the traditional urn at 8:30-9 p.m. "Last yeat Crystal Lake produced a state winner in Bill Santino, state record holder in the 14-15 year old half mile run at 2:01.1 minutes. Bill is chairman of our Youth Com mittee this year," Michael continued. "Working with him are ten other youngsters, in cluding Debbie Leukaufe, state record holder in the 12-13year old 50-yard dash at 6.3 seconds. Debbie is from Cary." Shamrocks Edged 2-1 In Eleven Innings Saturday Night At Rockford Rockford's Fitzpatrick and McHenry's Janik both pitched superb ball Saturday night at Rockford's Blackhawk Park when Rockford edged the Shamrocks 2-1. Both pitched a total of eleven innings. Fitz patrick struck out twelve and gave up eight hits; while Janik struck out ten and also gave up eight hits. The only difference between those two evenly matched teams was the failure of McHenry to put the hits together: McHenry left fifteen men on bases while Rockford left only seven men on the base paths. Fitzpatrick worked from the stretch every inning but the first and the last. Although he continued to get out of every jam that he faced. McHenry did put a couple of hits together in the fifth when George bunted with two outs and with his speed and a bad throw by the third baseman, he found himself at third. Then Mike Janik got a base hit to earn the Shamrock's only RBI. Tom Janik had difficulty putting his fast ball across the plate in the first two innings. In the first inning Tom walked the first batter and Wein got a base hit; Healey then hit a line shot for a controversial ground rule double to earn a RBI. In the second inning Tom gave up two straight hits but from then on Tom stopped Rockford cold until the eleventh when he gave up a hit, a sacrifice bunt, an infield hit, and then an error brought the winning run across the plate. v "McHenry will return home Tuesday, July 4, so spend an afternoon at the ball park. C. --The big surprise in the American League east is the Cleveland Indians, who think they're contenders. Whether their new ace, Gaylord Perry, is throwing with grease or not, he and other good pitchers are making the Indians tough. In a recent series against Detroit, the Indians won the f i rs t two games 2 - 1 , and i n . the second they got only two hits. That's the way pennant winners win games. But, of course, it's not yet likely the Indians will win a pen nant, though it also isn't im possible. What is good for baseball is that Cleveland again has a competitive team. The city was rumored about to lose its franchise in the American League, like Washington, and this year's team play may do more to keep it in C l e v e l a n d t h a n a n y t h i n g else. Fans love a winner and if the Indians don't com pletely collapse, the season should be a successful one for the club's new manage ment. Baltimore and Detroit were supposed to steal the thun der in this division of Amer ican League play and few thought the Indians would ever be on top of the divi sion* There they were for much of Mav.
