Squirrel Season Dates Squirrel hunting season dates have been announced by Jim Lockart, supervisor of the Division of Wildlife Resources for the Illinois Department of Conservation. The southern zone dates are from sunrise August 1 to sunset November 15. Northern zone hunters may hunt squirrels from September 1 to November 15. All dates are inclusive and hunting hours will run from sunrise to sunset each day. U.S. Route 36 will separate the northern zone from the southern zone. Hunters may take five squirrels a day and retain ten in possession after opening day, Lockart said. On opening day, the possession limit is five squirrels. Well, it was played and a thrilling game it was. The Orioles went into the 7th win­ ning, but Ken Ludwig took care of that with a grand slam home run to win for the Tigers. Brian Nuss was the winning pitcher, losing pitcher Tom Jacobson. Final score <*-7. Wednesday put the Cards and Sox together and the Cards came up winners 11 to 0. Dave Wickencamp went all the way for the Cards, pitching a NO HITTER for the victory. Bill Rowe started for the Sox and took the loss. Jeff Damiani hit his first homerun of the season. Thursday the Mets and Orioles played and the Mets won 9-2. Dale Urbanski started for the Mets and went all the way to pick up the victory, and Dale helped his own cause as he hit a homerun with two mates aboard. Tom Amann took the loss for the Orioles. The Cards and Braves went at it Friday with Steve Whitehead going for the Cards and Bill Brogan for the Braves. Illinois hunters who bag woodcocks annually are being asked to submit their names and addresses to the Illinois Department of Conservation to help the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife in a study of the bird. "Because woodcocks are a migratory bird they come under Federal, rather than state, jurisdiction," said Jim Lickart, supervisor of the Division of Wildlife Resources for the Illinois Department of Conservation. "Hunters who submit their names will be sent postage paid envelopes by the Federal agency in which they will be asked to submit one wing from each woodcock they bag during the hunting season. The wings will be used for sexing and aging in the study." Woodcocks migrating through Illinois generally frequent bottomland areas where they can feed on ear­ thworms. They are slightly larger than a quail with an exceptionally long beak. Their coloring is brown, which resembles dead leaves. They have an odd flight pattern, in that they will flush and fly a short distance and then land again. The bird is generally taken in Illinois only during the first few days of the season," Lockart said. "They have usually passed through the state by the time the ground freezes." Kevin Haley First To Run 500 Miles The first member of the 1972 McHenry high school cross country team to run 500 miles is senior Kevin Haley, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Haley, 3915 W. Maple, McHenry. Kevin , a 1971 Cross Country letterman is not stopping at 500 miles, but is continuing on to reach his goal of 1000 miles this summer. Other team members are not far behind Haley and should be reaching their goal of 500 miles soon. M.C.H.S. Cross Country boys who run during the summer are called "pluggers", because their running is done on their own in preparation for the fall season which starts Aug. 23. The Cards won 14 to 7. The Braves got a homerun from Bill Brogan and Dave Wickenkamp hit one for the Cards. The Braves ran into trouble in the seventh when they were the victims of a TRIPLE PLAY to end the game. Steve Whitehead was the winning pitcher, Bill Brogan the loser. Sunday saw the Braves come back after their loss Friday to defeat the Orioles 6-5. Mike Tonyan started for the Braves and was relieved in the 3rd by! Larry Oeffling who picked up the victory. Mike Tonyan hit two homeruns, Bill Brogan hit o n e f o r t h e B r a v e s / T o m Jacobson hit one for the Orioles, but the big play of the game was the steal of home by Mike Tonyan in the 7th to win the game. In the second game Sunday the Mets and Tigers played, Mets winning 10-4. Joe Knaack started for the Mets and picked up the victory. Bill Moer- schbaecher started for the Tigers and took the loss. In the third game the Sox and Giants met with the Sox win­ ning 10-2. Kenny Lester pitched his regular fine ball game and came up the winner. Rich Bender started for the Giants and ran into trouble in the first inning as he loaded the bases and Tommy Ludwig hit a grand slam homerun.
