\ Fro » The arm SAFETYSTANDARDS McHenry county farmers may unknowingly be breaking the iiew Williams-Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act (OHSA) of 1970. Under the new law, any farmer who employs anyone, for any length of time, is required to post a 10-by 16-inch safety poster and comply with four standards: - 1. Sanitation in Temporary Labor Camps. 2. Storage and Handling of Anhydrous Ammonia - applies to specifications for nurse tanks and application of anhydrous ammonia; • 3. Pulpwood Logging. 4. Slow-Moving Vehicles -- the SMV emblem, a yellow-orange fluorescent triangle with dark- red reflective border, must be properly displayed on all employee-driven farm vehicles and towed equipment traveling less than 25 mph on a public road. The law also requires the farmer to keep and have available for inspection a "Log of Occupation Injuries and Illnesses." This form (OHSA No. 100) and the safety poster are in the U.S. Department of Labor booklet called " Recordi ngkeepi ng Requir e- ments" This Booklet and the booklet "Safety and Health Standards for Agriculture" may be obtained free of charge by writing: Bureau of Labor Statistics, 300 South WackerDrive (8th floor), Chicago, Illinois 60606 (Att: Mr. Frank Bauer), or by checking with Louis Engelbrecht at the McHenry County Extension office. Records required by the act must be maintained for a period of not less than five years following the end of the calendar year to which they relate. Ffeilure to keep and maintain accurate records, or any other violation of the Act, may result in a mandatory penalty of $1.000 for each serious violation and optional penalties of up to $1,000 for each non- serious violation. , GRAIN CONDITIONING It's never to early to plan for your grain conditioning. Check with your power supplier concerning your needs for the coming harvest season. "KING OF KINGS" The White oak - called "king of kings" - in a 1953 USDA Forest Service publication- was officially designated Illinois state tfee after being selected by school children throughout the state. The species which normally grows 100 feet high and four feet in diameter is admired for its beauty, sturdiness,* longevity and wood quality. Adapted throughout the state, the white oak is prized for forest, high way and ornamental plantings. SMALL GRAINS Ripening small grain fields can tell you something about the success of a particular crop or variety. You don't have to wait until the grain is harvested to begin evaluating per formance. Early July is a good time to make a pre-harvest check of small grain fields. Here's what to check for now: 1. Standability. Small grain yields have increased sharply during the past 20 years. The single most important factor contributing to this dramatic increase is increased lodging resistance. Many new varieties stand well even at high fertility levels. 2. Tillering. Small grain varieties vary considerably in the amount of tillering or stolling. When you check tillering, also check how many tillers actually produce heads. 3. Uniform maturity. Look for uniform maturity within each variety you check. A variety that matures unevenly can cause problems at harvest time. Con trolling fence row weeds now can save you time and money latej-. Here is an easy and inex pensive spray program to help you effectively check fence-row weed growth: 1. If the vegetation in your fence rows is mainly broadleaf weeds, use 2,4-D at a rate of one-half to one pound in at least 20 gallons of water per acre. Remember that a fence row strip four-feet wide and two-miles long is about an acre. For complete control, you may need to spray 2,4-D twice during the cropping season. 2. If there are grass weeds such as foxtail in your fence New Features On Revised Rules Of Road Booklet Several new features of the revised Rules of the Road booklet will make it a more * effective tool for motorists preparing to take the drivers license examination, Secretary of State John W. Lewis said this week. > • rows you can mix dalapon with the 2,4-D to control both grasses and broadleaf weeds. Do not use dalapon when there are desirable grasses in the fence rows. / * Distribution of the booklet is expected to begin the latter part of this month. The state's program requiring all drivers to be examined at least once every nine years has emphasized the need, Secretary Lewis said? to provide applicants with the information required to pass the examination, and to present it in readable and un derstandable form. In the text, the use of technical and legal terms has been avoided wherever possible^ for better clarity and understanding, and a new type face and a more open n^akeup style have been adopted for easier reading, Lewis said. PAGF 19-PLAINDEALER-WEDNE SDAY, JULY 12, 1972 Alsof the material is arranged in a logical order matching the procedures followed in giving the examination, so that the ap plicant will be following an already familiar sequence when taking the examination, the Secretary said. Chapter headings, in the order presented, are (1) Get ting Your First Drivers License in Illinois, (2) Renewing Your License, (3) The Drivers License Examination: What You Must Know, (4) The Drivers License Examination: Signs, Signals and Markings, (5) The drivers License Examination: Traffic Laws, (6) The Drivers License Examination* Safety Rules, (7) The Drivers License Examination: Motor Vehicle Equipment, (8) After You Get Your License, (9) Other Im portant Information for Drivers and (10) Motorcycles. Lewiis pointed out that an opportunity for more effective study of the material is provided though the inclusion of a group of study questions at the end of each chapter similar lo those asked on the written portion of the examination. Of value to all drivers, in cluding those who do not face the immediate prospect of examination, are the changes in laws affecting the ownership and operation of motor vehicles enacted since the last revision of the booklet, illustrations of the new highway signs adopted the federal government and a list of commonly used words and terms relating to motor vehicles together with the legal definitions, which would aply in case of arrest and court ap pearance, Secretary Lewis said.
