Highview, McHenry, have just returned from a month's visit in Hermosa Beach, Calif., where they visited their daughter and son- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. Shinkle. During their stay the local couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary June 17, The observance in­ cluded dinner for family and friends at the Mermaid restaurant, Hermosa Beach. Mary Petry and Alf Heggeland were married June 17, 1922, in Chicago. They have lived in McHenry for the past eighteen years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Heggeland are retired, but remain active. Mr. Heggeland calls square dances and instructs art classes for senior citizens at Landmark school The couple has one dauphter, Mrs. Lorraine Shinkle, and two grandchildren, Linda Mineer and Kathy Shinkle, both of Phoenix. Filipski on Satur­ day, July 1, at St. Louise de Marillac church in La Grange Park. The lovely bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Gorgo of La Grange Park and the granddaughter of Mrs. Marie Gorgo of McHenry. The reception was held at the Belvedere in Chicago and was attended by many guests in­ cluding Marie Gorgo, Mr. and Mrs. Peter S. Gorgo, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Reese, Mr. and Mrs. James Dercole, Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Dercole, Mr. and Mrs. James M. Dercole, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. John M. Mascari, all of McHenry; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Gorgo, Sister M. Geneva Gorgo, Rochester, Minn.; William J. Gorgo, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew E. Dercole and son, DesPlaines and Mr. Mrs. George Motto, Elmwood Park. Mrs. Gorgo was. happy to attend this lovely wedding. She has been present at the nuptials of -four of her five ©rand- daughters. The fifth one is a nun, Sister M. Geneva Gorgo, who teaches in Rochester, Minn. * St. Agatha To Attend Game July 19 's Court Ball Members of St. Agatha Court 777, National Catholic Societv of Foresters of Johnsburg, are planning to attend the Cubs ball game on Wednesday, July 9. A stop will be made in Dundee for dinner after the game. Junior court members of high school age are invited by the adult court to attend. The bus will leave from St. John's school at 9 o'clock. Reservations should be made with Mrs. Richard Dehn or Mrs. Paul^itzen by July 16. There will be no regular July meeting of St. Agatha court. tf MR. AND MRS. DANIEL MAX H0NORED AT RECEPTION - A post wedding reception was held Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Olsen, 313 N. Front street, McHenry, for Marsha Lee Olsen Max and her husband, aniel Max, son of Mrs. LeRoy Max of Heyworth, 111. Eighty guests were present at the garden party. Among them were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Deef and Mr. and Mrs. Einar Olsen of McHenry, grandparents of Marsha, and Mrs. Harold Sullivan of Normal, grandmother of the bridegroom. The couple exchanged nuptial vows May 26, 1972, in Peoria. Marsha is a 1971 graduate of MCH8 and attended McHenry County college and Illinois State university at Normal. The Sunday, July 9, celebration was at­ tended by 120 guests. The celebration was hosted by her children and their wives and husbands, Wm. Powers, Batavia; George, David, Kenneth Powers and Evelyn Freund, Woodstock; Dorothy Whining, McHenry; Mary Burge, Grayslake; Joseph and Jack Powers, Crystal Lake; and her grandchildren. Other guests attending were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Doherty, Nellie Doherty, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Anglese, Virginia and Steve Doherty, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wildhagen, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Dobyns, Mr. and Mrs. George Whiting, Stella Graham, Natalie Reese, Mrs. Henry Smith, Mercedes Morenz, Daisy Juhl, Martha Emmerson and Rose Da men. Bible Church Picnic Slated Next Sunday This year's annual Sunday School picnic of the Wonder Lake Bible church will be held Saturday, July 15, at the far west pavilion in Woodstock city park. All Sunday School children, parents and church families are invited to attend. The bus will leave the church at 1 p.m. for anyone needing transportation to the park. The remaining picnic schedule is as f o l l o w s : 1 : 3 0 , a r r i v a l : 2:30, dinner; 3:45, games; 5:45, devotional; 6:00, snack; 6:30, bus leaves park for return trip to church. Permission slips are required for children under 12 whose parents cannot attend. All food will be .provided for these children. Families are asked to bring fried chicken, a dish and Revive Interest In Old Schools Within County The acquisition of the old Union school, by the McHenry County Historical society has brought out interest in old school pictures and in­ formation. Dr. Myrtle Shaw, now of Albany, N.Y., a native of Union, sent in a picture of the eighth grade graduation class of 1916, taken at the side of the school. Those in the class picture were „ Emil Steinke, Lota Renie, Helen Schneiderwind, Ruby Williams, Frederica Wilke, Emma Nulle and Elmer Shaw. A newspaper clipping, source unknown, but found in a book that belonged to the mother of Charles Barnes, who attended the Riley school, was sent in by Mrs. Charles Barnes of Elgin. The article is headed by a sketch of the Java school, with caption "Where first town meeting was held, 1850", and begins with "The first school teacher of Riley was Carolyn -Cobb". (In the 1968 history of the county it states that the first formal education was started in Riley township when Miss Caroline Cobb taught her first classes in 1837.) The clipping then goes on to list "other pioneer teachers beginning with Jeannete Baynard, Josiah Balliett, Amanda Mackey Burroughs, John Hadsall, Anna Williams, Jane Stanford, A.E. Druse, Georgia Spnable, Lucinca, Rose, Lester and Amory Barber, Norman Clapp, Nehemia Wheeler; Jones Clapp, Emma Sears, Nell Potter Gardener, Sara Walker, Flora Harback, May Coleman, Myrtle Sisson Cook, Sara Freeman, Rose Barber Stevens, Wm. Albert Sheldon, Eva Shurtleff, Belle, Lester and Nora Reid, Ike O. Meschini of North Scituate served as best man. Groomsmen were Bruce Dolan, Richard Dolan and Steven Crawford, all of North Scituate. The reception, held in Car- pentersville, was a double celebration. It also honored the bride's parents in a surprise party on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. After a trip to Mackinac Island, Ottawa and Montreal, Canada, the couple will reside , at 124 Grove street, Scituate. The bride is a 1970 graduate of McHenry high school. STATE SCHOLARSHIPS Final date for Illinois high school graduates and gollege undergraduates to apply for state scholarships has been extended to Aug. 1. Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie has had the deadline extended to allow more students to apply. He said: "This year -- for the first time in the 14-year history of the state scholarship program --ample funds will be provided for all students who can demonstrate need." He said appropriation of $54 million has been assured to assist full-time students attending any Illinois college or university, public or private. PLAN TRIP TO ITALY Mr. and Mrs: Clarence Mullen, daughter, Clara, son, Larry, of McCullom Lake and Tammy Jen&en will leave next Tuesday on a four-week trip to Italy, where they will visit members of Mrs. Mullen's family. The Mullens have noit been back to Italy since they were married there following World War II. ...And They Lived Happily Ever After,. A happy couple as they made their way up the long lane to the bride's home in Lakewood subdivision for a wedding reception were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Frett. The newlyweds, both employees of the Plain- dealer, had just exchanged nuptial vows at the altar of St. Patrick's Catholic church Saturday, July 8„ The bride is the former Patti Moer- schbaecher.
