PAG E 4- PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, JULY 14,1972 ' Holiday Hills Bonnie Kellen, Marge Conned 385-6344 385-3756 Make Plans For Annual Picnic On August 13 Plan ahead! Save the day! August 13 is the day of the annual subdivision picnic, sponsored by the Holiday Hills Property Owners Association. As in the past, everyone will be having a great time. There will be games, booths, a cake walk, food, prizes, and good neigh borly fun of all kinds. It would be a great day to have friends out for a visit to Holiday Hills, as the entertainment will already be planned. I almost forgot to mention that there will be a band to play music throughout the day, so it really will be quite a day. WEDDING CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations and best wishes to a very happy couple, Connie and A1 Rowlett who were married on July 1. Connie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Abbink of Evergreen Street. While the newlyweds were off on their honeymoon, the entire Abbink and Berens relations celebrated ^ the wedding with a reception at the Abbink home, which lasted through the entire' fourth of July weekend, culminating with a family picnic at the home of Laverne and Joe Berens, Vi's brother, in Skokie, on Tuesday, July 4. VISITORS FROM NEW JERSEY The Rev. and Mrs. John Spindler and their daughter, Carol, from Stone Harbor, New Jersey, recently spent four days with the Richard Hellmig family. Mrs. Spindler is Libby Hellmig's sister. It was a wonderful reunion, and even more fun was in store for Kathy Hellmig, who returned to New Jersey with the Spindlers. She will be spending her time soaking up the sun and sea at their oceanside home. THE ROTHS VS HURRICANE AGNES What started out as a beautiful and glorious vacation in the "sunny south" ended up in a nightmarish state for Pat, Bud and Kurt Roth recently when they encountered Hurricane Agnes. Leaving on June 10, they motored to Florida and rented a lovely beach apartment on Long Boat Key just outside of Sarasota, Fla. A day at Disneyworld was especially enjoyed by Kurt and swim- 7 ming, surfing, fishing and just plain loafing was enjoyed by all until June 19 when suddenly a change in the weather certainly changed the plans of the Roths. Although hurricanes are unheard of in June according to Florida residents, along came >Q CiPPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO J{ of^Dr. J< OTICE The office of^tJr. John T. Gray, Optometrist 1260 N. Green St McHenry, III. will be closed for annual vacation from June 16th to July 18th FOR APPOINTMENT PHONE 385-0186 ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo "Agnes." As Pat describes it, it was really something to see. As the tides began to rise and the waves broke against and went over the forty foot sea-wall, their beautiful swimming pool suddenly became a salt water pool. Every time the surf and waves would hit, their apart ment would shake in the seventy mile winds and when the phone rang at 3 a.m. and they were told to evacuate quickly, there was complete chaos in the area. What took Pat two weeks to get together for their vacation, only took them one hour to repack and they were out, leaving the refrigerator full of food, several pieces of forgotten clothing and were on their way to the Sarasota high school which was the evacuation center set up by the American Red Cross. Already several of the Keys had been evacuated, some towns were completely under water, many causeways which linked the Keys to the mainland were impassable and many bridges were out. All phone service was completely discontinued and at 5 a.m. with the town in mass confusion, they were sitting with many other bewildered tourists eating donuts and coffee and were informed that they would be unable to return to their beach house until possibly the following day so decided to cut their vacation two days short and head home. They drove through torrential rains all the way to Chattanooga, Tenn., and although the experience was a wild one, they did have a wonderful vacation and it will be one that none of them will ever forget. GET-WELL WISHES Get-weU wishes are sent this week to Vickie Mavis of Park Terrace who was taken to McHenry hospital following an auto accident on Monday night, June26, herein the subdivision. Also very sincere wishes are sent to Patty Emerson of Oak Lane who spent almost a week in McHenry hospital following an auto accident. Hope both you gals are feeling much better now. FOURTH OF JULY PICNIC If you happened to pass Jim and Karen Kottke's house on the fourth of July, you weren't seeing double...they had an all day picnic and present were twin brothers Jerry and Jim Stanley and their families, the Larry Kottke family and the Paul Kottke family. After a delicious barbecue supper, the whole gang traveled over to Veterans Acres in Crystal Lake to finish off the day watching their beautiful display of fireworks. k FAMILY GATHERING It was a very happy family reunion in Freeport, recently when Don and Midge Teuber with Kris, Kurt and Pat drove to Don's folks home, Mr. and r Mrs. Arthur Teuber, and had the opportunity of also visiting with Don's brother and sister- in-law, Wayne and Tina, and their daughter Andrea. It's been two and a half years since Don has^seen his brother as Wayne is a U.S. Air Force man, stationed in Ipswitch, England, has been in service for four years and will be returning to England shortly. A delightful day and visit was shared by all. NEW NEIGHBORS A very hearty welcome is extended to Robert and Marsha Ledford of Poplar street and also to their two children, Lisa, six years old, and Kenny, seven years old, who moved here recently from Chicago. We all know you'll be very happy you chose Holiday Hills as your new home. Farewells are sent to the Adams family of Poplar street who just recently moved to Prescott, Ariz. WORD OF CAUTION It has been brought to our attention that a habit with some of the children could lead to very serious injury and we would like to ask all parents to {Mease tell their children not to go near or follow the tractor when it is in use. Many of our men donate precious hours of their time cutting weeds on the m^ny vacant lots in thesubdivisiwi to improve their appearance, but have the problem of inquisitive little children standing around or following them and many times rocks, glass and metal W I •r debris hidden in the tall grass are thrown i by the blades and could hit one of these innocent litUe bystanders. So please, parents, warn your children of this hazard and ask them to please stay away from the tractor when it .is in operation. The girls set up camp on Friday night, and spent the rest of the weekend swimming, hiking, playing volleyball, cooking, and throwing water balloons. The girls who went on this fun-filled weekend were Barb Smith, Debbie Smith, Theresa Maras, Patti Maras, Tammy Smith, Judy Abbink, Karen Anderson, Jackie Koppen, Karen Lanway, Dawn Wilson, and Leslie Jende. Ladies ac companying the girls were Mrs. Karen Maras, and Mrs. Libby Hellmig. They both agreed they had a wonderful time, and the girls did too. MORE CAMPING Carolyn, Craig, Ann, and Craig Stackhouse, Jr., recently went camping in Shelbyville. Carolyn reports it was her first time camping, and except for the rain which never seemed to end, she's ready to try it again, preferably in a camper instead of a tent. But on their one sunny day, the Stackhouse family enjoyed the facilities of the beautiful lake, and went swimming, boating and skiing. TRIP AROUND LAKE MICHIGAN The Richard Hellmig family, Dick, Libby, Gordon and David, along with the Saunders children, Lori and Bill, spent the last weekend motoring in their motor home around Lake Michigan. Heading north into Wisconsin, their route took them along many scenic roadways into the upper peninsula of Michigan. There they stayed in St. Ignace, and took the boat to Mackinac Island. They enjoyed the horse and buggy trip around this island and then after spending the night in very, very cold weather, they started home, this time taking the Michigan route. GOETTEt Rt. 120, 3 Miles East of McHcnry (815) 385-3330 Walkingtons Entertain Two AFS Students The Walkington household had a very busy schedule last week with two AFS students staying with* them. They arrived last Wednesday evening and left Saturday morning. These students were on (heir way from Minnesota to Boston and New York and then on home this week. The two who stayed with the Walkingtons were Juan Carlos Paquez of Rosario, Argentina, and Christopher Milner of Sheffield, England. The purpose of the AFS students is "Peace and Love Around the World", ftiis the Walkingtons could see and they believe that our peace is going to have to come through the young people of the world. (I think that a lot of us agree with this theory). There were 48 AFS kids from 28 different countries in McHenry area homes this past week and no one could have enjoyed the young people staying with them more than the Walkingtons did. It's a wonderful experience say the Walkingtons. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL BARBEQUE Another successful chicken barbecue at the Ringwood church this past Sunday July 9. There were lots of people out and they got to see and visit with people whom they hadn't seen since the last year's barbecue. Seemed like a good [dace to meet and visit. The weather was again with us (although we sure wondered part of the time.) We just said our prayers and the Good Lord was with us aU the way, we had a perfect day. The chicken cookers (men) were at their best again this year. It is really something to see when they go to turn a whole grate of chickens at once. It takes many busy hands and willing hearts to make such a success of so much work. Those of you who missed the Magic act Saturday evening because of the rain shouldn't have. That's why we have the tent so we can continue with our planned programs. But the young and the old really en joyed the Magic under the tent. Thanks to aU who worked, donated and came to our din- jjgr. Without you it wouldn't and cd&ldn't be.
