POLITICAL CORNER The McHenry county Republican party has opened a Nixon-Ogilvie headquarters in Woodstock to provide a center for Republican activity in the area, in the up-coming fall elections. The headquarters is located on Main street, next to the Miller theatre, and will be manned by volunteers. The headquarters is one of several being opened here in McHenry county. The headquarters was opened by Jim Nowlan, Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor, who spoke to a group of interested Republicans at the opening July 8. He praised the record of Governor Ogilvie and spoke highly of the records of local Republican candidates. FORTY YEARS AGO Mr. and Mrs. Louis Althoff «nd family moved last Thur­ sday into their beautiful home on Waukegan street which has been undergoing extensive improvements during the summer. A cloud burst and severe electrical storm which swept this locality last Thursday sent the temperature down 25 degrees within an hour and resulted in considerable damage in various parts of this region as well as causing the death of a nine year old boy in Union. Mrs. Katherine McCann, housekeeper for Father Lehane at Rockford for the past thirty years, died at St. Joseph's Health resort at Wedron last week. She will be remembered 11. On Monday, July 25, Mrs. John Molidor of Volo suddenly passed away at St. Anthony's hospital, Chicago, following aif operation. , Two children playing in McCullom Lake narrowly escaped drowning as they stepped into a deep hole not far from shore. Had it not been for a public utilities man who was nearby the lives of at least one of the children would have been lost. The date set for the annual picnic of the McHenry county supervisors is this Thursday when a boat trip will be taken to the lotus beds at Grass Lake. Supervisor S.H. Freund is in charge. Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Brown of Ringwood entertained the postmasters and their wives and mail carriers at a banquet at the M.W. Hall, the ladies aid served the dinner. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 31, 1947) A family celebration was held at the Stephen H. Freund home July 25 in honor of Mrs. Freund's eightieth birthday anniversary. The Bellwet Diecasting Co., located on Third street, south erf Elm street, is one of McHenry's new businesses. Owners are Charles CampbeU of Woodstock and Robert Kralowetz of McHenry. Should anyone have any doubt as to the "up-to- dateness" of McHenry he need only step into the Old Bridge (Schmaltz Miller's) Tavern on Riverside drive where modern television has been installed. It is the first such set in McHenry and in fact in McHenry County. Leo C. Thompson, Riverside drive, McHenry, was proclaimed winner of first prize in the Elgin Courier News s p o n s o r e d a m a t e u r , , photography competition. Mr. Thompson, who is a meter reader for the Public Service company, received the top award of $12 for his unusual camera study of power boating on the Fox River. The community was shocked July 28 to learn of the death of Mrs. Frank Kempfer, Sr., 58, who passed away at St. Theresa's hospital, Waukegan, following an illness of only a few days. ^The George Knaack family has moved from the Baur place on Elm street to the Theodore Stock home in West McHenry. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 2, 1962) Robert Lee Bensdn, 3 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Benson of Martin, road, McHenry, was killed in an auto accident which occurred July 31, near Mason City, Iowa. Injured in the crash were the child's mother, his grand­ mother whom they were visiting and two other Benson children. Guest vocalist at this Friday's concert of - the municipal stage band will be Joe Ann Tatge who has chosen to sing "The Man I Love", and "Birth of the Blues". Donald Givens returned from a two weeks vacation in which he visited the Seattle Fair, Yellowstone Park, Denver and Salt Lake City. Leaniia Sellek, 16, was selected as Miss Wonder Lake of 1962 at the annual fireman's carnival. A recent and welcome ad­ dition to the Pony League field is new score board equipment donated by George P. Freund, Jr. Ed Doyle's Bluebirds won the championship in the major league. The Eagles behind the steady pitching of Mark Domoto beat the Owls 9-2 to tie Otto Larson's team for second place. Norman Knaack's Falcons in the minor league won the title in a close race. Howard W. Liefer of McHenry has been appointed Northern Illinois represen­ tative for Allied Leasing Co., of Evanston. Henry, Jr., of Route 1, Algonquin, 111., graduated from basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. He is a 1969 graduate of Crystal Lake Community high, and attended McHenry County college, all of Crystal Lake, 111. Navy Petty Officer Second Class John H. Eberle, Jr., of 7417 South drive, Wonder Lake, visited Malaga, Spain, aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy. His ship's six-day stay in the southern Spanish coastal town marked the first time an air­ craft carrier had visited there. EXTEND LICENSE DEADLINE The deadline for display of 1972-73 truck plates and other second division vehicles licensed on a fiscal year basis has been extended to midnight, Monday, July 31, by Secretary of State John W. Lewis. In making the extension, Secretary Lewis said "a late crush of applications and an increase in the number of registrations over last year prompted the moving of the deadline from July 15 to July 31." Dick will receive seven weeks of recruit training at the Navy Recruit Training center, Great Form Army Of Card. Carrying Americans Gerald S. Arenberg, executive director of the American Federation of Police announced the issuance of A card by his organization to promote patriotism. "We have all heard of those card carrying Communists who would sell this nation out" he stated", well now we are forming an Army of Card Carrying Americans!" The wallet size card has an American Flag with the words, "I am A Card Carrying American" followed by the pledge of allegiance to the United States. Tne holders sign the card at the bottom.
