PAGE 7-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, JULY 21, 1972 "WALDEN: A CEREMONY" -- "Dress a scarecrow in your last shift, you standing shiftless by, who would not soonest salute the scarecrow?" asks Holli Nolan during a rehearsal for the Wood stock Actor's Studio production "Walden: A Ceremony", to be performed at the Woodstock city park at 9 p.m. July 27, 28 and 29. Hie play is directed by Dean Button. No admission will be charged. LAKE RIGHTS "Editor: "On Sunday, July 16, our family took advantage of the beautiful summer weather and took our canoe out on Mc- Cullom lake and later to go swimming at one of , our beaches in Lakeland Park. We were soon disheartened, however, by the sight of people fishing at various points around the lake. One boor was fishing off a pier at McCullom Lake, no less than five men were fishing at Spojnia and a group of children were fishing at the Lakeland Park boat launch. And all of these people were catching fish. "As everyone should know by now, McCullom Lake is closed to fishing until spring of 1973. The fish need all of that time to grow to maturity. The stocking of die lake was not done for a chosen few to greedily get the jump on the rest of us, but so that all of us who live around the lake may enjoy the sport in the future. "Later, as we went to the beach, we were further angered. We saw a boat in the lake with a large 15 hor sepower motor. Seven horse power is the limit. A group of young people left a bag of garbage on the ground just a few steps from the garbage can. Two motor boats went right through the swimming area, not 50 feet from shore. "These may seem like trivial problems, but it is just the sort of thing that contributes to the attitude of apathy, selfishness and greed that has caused the present crisis of our en vironment. Ecology is not something for the other guy to worry about. It is the respon sibility of each of us. Some people seem to think that the world is their own private pleasure palace. "In the rot too distant future, those of us who care about the earth will be protected, by law, from those who don't. "I personally am looking forward to the time when boats with motors are banned from McCullom Lake and the state will have jurisdiction over what goes on in the lake. "You may say *1 have my rights' but my friends, your rights end where mine begin. "Mrs. Dorothy Lense "2000 N. Oak Drive "McHenry" HIGH WATER "Dear Editor: "We live at Pistakee lake, near the mouth of the Fox river across from Half Moon island. A week or so ago we called the County Water Patrol, in forming them of the very high water due to all the rain we've had. We requested them to stop, or at least slow down the weekend boat traffic here on Pistakee lake, by the Fox river, because when the big boats speed by, the waves come right up over the seawall and our lawn, as well as the neighbors' lawns, are continually under water. Last year when the water was high they did stop the boat traffic on the weekends. "Our phone call was to no avail so we wrote the sheriff a letter stating our problem and requesting his cooperation. Still, they did nothing about it. "Finally, last Sunday the Water Patrol boat came. However, he was far south of us on Fox river and after an nouncing to three boats, 'The river is dosed', he sped off and was not seen again. So he ac complished nothing. "Now, after yesterday's rain, the lake is touching the bottom of the piers in our area and will probably rise some more. Much of the land around here is already under water. "We feel we should get some consideration from the county sheriff and hope they will be out here this weekend to control the boat traffic. Anything you can do to help us would be ap preciated. "Although we are only here for the summer we pay high taxes just like the- yearly residents. We don't make use of the schools or most of the things we are supporting with our tax dollars. All we are asking is that we get some cooperation from the County Water Patrol, to which we feel we are en titled. Thank you. "Sincerely, "Mrs. Jacob Hugel "4528 Riverdale Drive "McHenry Thegift that grows. Tfelse stock in America. Perhaps they deserve to be included in the roundup of sporting events associated with the Fair. ' While none of the four will replace girl watching as a favorite sport, the tractor pull and tractor rodeo do have sizable followings. Two tractor events are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, before the grandstand audience. A total of $175 (seven prizes) is being offered to tractor rodeo contestants. This is open to all hot rod tractors on rubber tires and tractors will 200 feet. Mimmum weight limit is 4,000 potinds in this rodeo. At the same time an antique tractor pulling contest will be forming. This is open to all tractors 35 years or older! Tractors must have rubber tires, and the classes will be determined when judges see the entry list. These old-timers will compete for trophies. One of the main events at the Fair is at noon Friday, Aug. 4, when the major tractor pulling competition is held. Four weight classes have been established and a total of $825 is being provided jn prize money in tractor pull this year. A total of sixteen rules are listed on the revised rules sheet, and safety is stressed in all these events. Fourth tractor-oriented event is at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, when garden tractors vie for one of five classes. Trophies to the top three winners in each class will be offered. Years ago farmers prided themselves on the team of horses that pulled with the most durability. Today you see this pride and satisfaction centered in the tractor pulling contest, says Everett Hunter, one of the men involved in this fair feature. Entries may be made at the fair office on the fairgrounds where Winnie Cassiana and Cheri Nickels, fair secretaries, are headquartering on week days. Deadlines for the four events are Aug. 3, and the fair catalog has the exact times. As usual, the grandstand is free so this <qan be an entertaining attracnoirfor-a^arge number of people this Those-'fesponsible for the tractor pulling features are Everett Hunter, A1 Fischer, Ken Fiske, Stuart Wells, Earl Howe, Mike Murray and John Klindworth.
