The Softball success - on the diamond and in obtaining many team members - ranks as one of the bright moments in the county's more than 25 years of participation in the annual sports classic. Advancing are these teams, victorious in district com petition held in a one-day tourney at Woodstock last week: Boys' 4-H, Slow Pitch, Young Adult, All-County and 35'ers. McHenry county ranked high in all those clas in one or more past years ex- Jn Boys' 4-H. This year's 4- H team was composed of the larvard Prairie Toppers, augmented -by three 4-H ambers from other teams. Young Adult and All- teams won with tight shutout victories. The 35'ers parlayed the hurling ef fectiveness of Ken Schauers to win, 4-1 and set the stage for the classic struggle against DeKalb in the probable finals game. Madeline Maselter In Special Olympics At Los Angeles Aug. 14 Madeline Maselter, McHenry, has beat named to Illinois' 120-member team to compete in the National Special Olympics at Los Angeles, Aug. 14-18, Robert Lambourn, executive director for the McHenry County Association for the Retarded, announced today. Excited with the honor ac corded one of the clients at Pioneer Cento*, Lambourn said he is thrilled with the op portunity offered Madeline with her selection to this statewide team. "Team members will compete in swimming, track and field events. They will also visit tourist attractions in the Los Angeles area." John Maselter, Madeline's father, said she is "excited and thrilled" over her selection and is working out daily in her Olympic event, the 50-yard free style. Since the Maselters live near the Fox River, she con centrates her swimming practices there with the help of her father. Madeline is 28 years old. She is mentally retarded, suffering brain damage at birth. Mark LeFevre, her adviser and confidant in this special program for the handicapped, is high in his praise of her dependability and enthusiasm. Early this spring, Lambourn and LeFevre arranged for expanded special education program for Pioneer Center clients in conjunction with staff members at McHenry high school. Staff members and several students volunteered for this program. Mike Shanahan, coach at the West campus, gave Madeline swimming instruction, and she competed in the Illinois Olympics for the Handicapped in June. She qualified for the national finals in the 50-yard free style, covering the distance in 55.9 seconds. This is the first time Pioneer Center clients have par ticipated in this Olympics for the Handicapped. Lambourn and his staff are pleased with the significant benefit it provides all the clients. About a dozen of the clients par ticipated in the state event. Equally significant, was the development of social contact and broadened well-being of each client through par ticipation in the program at McHenry high school and in the state contest at Chicago. Gregory O'Halleran's name did not appear in the list of All- Stars in the Youth League report. Gregory is 14 years old and a player with the Giants. Those things just should not happen. Our reporters do not do those things purposely. Sorry, Gregory. Stay right in there - you're an ALL-STAR. Henry Foss, that man from the east, finally caught up to us during his visit. But, our visit was all too short. Henry mentioned that each year some of his old friends are gone and it doesn't seem the same. kegatta Coming -- Mike Niesen phoned to say that the 1st Annual Catholic Charities Regatta will be held next Sunday, August 6, on the Pistakee waters at 1 p.m. This is a benefit race to aid the Lake Marie Catholic Camp for children. Boats will be of the outboard pleasure class - and fast- 60- 100 miles per hour over a one and one half mile course. Races are sponsored by the McHenry based Great Lakes Boat Club. If you like action, here it is. Wish we had a picture to prove it - Chief Espey's power + mower stopped - dead - so he pulled the cord four or five times and away we go. Only trouble was the mower was in gear. The Chief put on a great EARL WALSH So I Hear .SPORTS EDITOR sprint, but it took a tree to stop the run-a-way machine. That we would like to have seen. Sunday was a busy day. Went to Mass to see Paul Kent, young son of the Dave Kents, receive his First Holy Communion. His brother Tom was one of the Mass servers. Very impressive. The Kents were nice enough to invite the Walshes to their home for a social time. Wished we could have stayed longer. We hardly got started in a visit with Marie Niesen (another Irishman). Figured we could have covered a lot of ground if there was time. So--out to the Zion Lutheran Church on Rte. 120 where we saw the beautify new Christian Education addition. The dedication and open house brought a large crowd of parishioners and well wishers. ^Pastor Herman Graef is a happy man as he contemplates many activities for the young people of his church. Back into the loop and a visit to the wake of Dr. Jos. P. Frey. Quite a man was Dr. Frey. He worked in his dentist office up until a week before his death- then passed away peacefully after living a useful life that carried into the high 80's. It wasn't the niight to visit Bimbo's, but in we went in spite of the Cubs winning a double header and the Sox losing. It " I worth it to see the smile on lie's face. John Rogers had been in to see the Cubs and brought home a Cub banner for the Bimbo boys. What we can't un derstand is that John left the second game after the third inning. (Cubs were losing 4-0). Asked John why the heck he left before the last man was out. "Oh, we heard it on the radio," said John. Those Cub fans are something else. Imagine driving all the way to Wrigley Field to hear a game on radio! Our friend, Lloyd Freund phoned to say that Johnsburg is sponsoring the AABC baseball tournament. Next Saturday afternoon at l o'clock the Johnsburg Tigers will play Dundee. About 3:30 the Elgin Brewers cross bats with the Judson College nine. Games to be played at Johnsburg. McHenry fans will see several Shamrock players on the contending teams. Lloyd never loses his en thusiasm for sports. He invites you fans to see the games. Should be real good. It was a surprise to us to learn that John Kraus died. John was a former police chief in Lake moor - a real good man. He and his wife later moved to the far north in Wisconsin. McHenry, like the rest of the world, moves too fast. We can't keep track of our friends. Record Sunfish Taken CONCHITA - 8 DAYS Starts on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. AUGUST 2, 1972 Way McHenry County Farm Bureau's unprecedented domination of the district Sports Festival softball tourney (Ave out of seven teams ad vance to the state finals in late August) will help make up for loss of points suffered with no participation in swimming this year. Many of the county rural swimmers - participants in last year's finals - have other commitments on the dates in the third week of August when the Illinois Farm Sports Festival is held. Scoring is weighted to em phasize participation, so qualifying two more softball teams than last year with a total of 10 members on a squad helps make up for the deficiency caused by the ab sence of swimming par ticipants, explains Henry Edgerton, executive secretary of the McHenry County Farm Bureau. McHenry county finished third last year, highest in its history, and has a fair chance of finishing among the first five this year. Bowlers had a good season in the early spring, and other events besides softball WE'VE JUST RECEIVED A LIMITED SHIPMENT OF ^CARRY- In Marion County 4000 BTU, 115-V«tt, 7-Amp. JUST 43-fct. The Illinois state record for green sunfish was broken recently when Kenneth Collier, Sr., Salem, landed a two pounder from a Marion County farm pond. Collier's sunfish surpassed the old record of one pound, four ounces, set by Edward Smith, Bartonville. Smith took his record catch from a Sugar Knoll strip Jnine lake in 1971. According to William Harth, supervisor of the Division of Fisheries for the Illinois Department of Conservation, Collier took his record fish using a Yellow Scorpion lure. The fish was 11V4 inches in length and had a girth of 12^ inches. The record fish contest is sponsored yearly by the Illinois Department of Conservation.
