TEA AN® COBNPMSIERS There aren't many of us left who remember Sixbey's General Store. It was more "th^n a store; it was a gathering place, a news bureau, a bright spot in a boy's summer afternoon. You would come in from the hot dusty street, and the shaded store was cool. Im mediately you encountered a tantalizing blend of scents -- apples, licorice, spices and smoked ham. Grown-up conversation enhanced your feeling of excitement as they viewed and reviewed town happenings. You always took a long time to decide between a choco late or a lemon drop, so that this exciting visit could be prolonged. Our town has changed since then. For those of us whose memories linger in Six bey's Store, it hardly seems the same place. Yet one thing's the same. At the corner of Elm and Main, St. Mark's steeple still points skyward. Man's need for God never changes. And the Church remains constant as it teaches the truths of God's love and presence. "Ask and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you" (Matthew 7:7 KJV). Prayer is both asking and receiving. It is talking to God, the Father, and His speaking to the one who prays, through im pressions, verses of scripture or through life experiences. Prayer is making one's request known to God in faith. Jesus taught in the above scripture that we are to ask - seek - and knock. First, prayer is asking and receiving. When one knows the will of God regarding a need, he can ask God in faith, and receive. When the will of God is known in a particular situation one can pray with complete confidence that this is God's will and it will be provided. John illustrates this truth concerning prayer with these words, "and this is the confidence that we have in Him (Jesus Christ), that if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us; and if we • know that He heareth us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have desired of Him" (1 John 5:14, 15 KJV). Second, prayer is seeking and finding. When one does not know the divine will of God regarding a particular desire, then, he is to seek His will in prayer until it is found. This prayer is concerning knowledge of God's will in a particular situation. Once God's will is known, then prayers become expressions of faith and belief in their coming to pass. The Old Testament prophet, Jeremiah taught. "Thai shall ye call upon Me (God said) and ye shall go and pray unto Me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall search for Me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29: 12, 13). Third, prayer is knocking and opening. When one knows God's will and finds a closed door - God does not seem to answer - we are to continue persistent in prayer. We are to knock, and keep on knocking until God opens the door. This type praying, more than any other, is a testing prayer. It tests our faith in a loving God. It tests our own concern in the matter. It forces us to seriously determine God's will in a particular situation. This type prayer is a mature Christian's prayer. This is a miracle working prayer (Luke 18: 1-8). Prayer is the basis of our faith. The main foundation for our faith in a living God is answered prayer! God said, "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not" (Jeremiah 33:3 KJV). 1 AM war kxw neV tcid wu that our prices are loner titan flie competlticn, I I U I , CurfewtfiePcrdleamSJ. .. 1 Speak Easy Clearance Sale' \ cur prices are the tonest ever!
