Vernon Freund has returned home from St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, and is recovering from an injury to his knee received a few weeks ago. , , TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 21, 1947) A thirteen month old child, who was vacationing with hep parents in the Lily cottage in the Stenger-Owen subdivision, McHenry, was electrocuted Aug. 20 when she touched a lamp in which there was a short and a nearby pipe. The latter furnished the ground and the resulting 110 volts caused the electrocution. The child's name is Joanne Solon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Solon. From farm and city, near and far, young and old gathered last weekend at the city park to enjoy the great variety of en­ tertainment offered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars at their first V.J. Day memprial carnival. Louise Johnson, representing the McHenry high school, at­ tended the Future Homemakers of America Leadership Training con­ ference Aug. 12-16 at East Bay Camp at Bloomington. Patrons of business houses in West McHenry should be very gratefulrbcjthe new parking lot consisting ofMhree lots. The -new parking space, formerly the Schiessle and Weber property, was purchased recently by Howard Wattles and is now available for free half day parking. Through the kindness and efforts of Mrs. Betty Nielsen of Riverside drive, Circle I of the W.S.C.S. was able to put forth a splendid style show which took place at the Villa Club resort, Aug. 13. TEN YEARS AGO Taken from the files of Aug. 23, 1962) A spectacular fire which destroyed the high white barn on the Maurice Gladstone property just north of the city limits attracted hundreds to the scene late Saturday afternoon and caused a traffic jam for ' about an hour. Destroyed in the blaze were about 1,000 bales of hay stored on the second floor. Three horses which are housed in the barn in the winter were in the field. Members of McHenry's three companies battled the blaze which might well have destroyed the garage and house if it had not been for the efficiency of the fire fighters. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mroz of Holiday Hills announce the birth of a son, August 15, at McHenry hospital. Performances are at 2 and 8 p.m. "Y" Men's Club Will Sponsor August Circus The Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros, circus, the world's largest, is coming to Crystal Lake under the sponsorship of the Lake Region Y's Men's club Thur­ sday Aug. 31. There will be performances afternoon and night at 2 and 8 p.m. The circus tents will be located at the grounds on Manor Road south of Rt. 14. An advance sale of circus tickets is now in progress throughout the area by all Y's Men's club members. The funds raised by the circus project are to be devoted to the Y's Men's $20,000 subscription to the new YMCA building. More than 150 performers, representing sixteen different countries, are included in the 600 people that travel with the circus. A caravan of over 100 vehicles is required to tran­ sport the circus and its ex­ tensive menagerie, including three herds of elephants, on a national tour of some 200 cities. Doors to the world's largest circus tent will open one hour prior to each performance. Dr. George Alvary of McHenry won first place in the import division of the fourth annual midwest Bonsai show held in Dundee where thousands viewed unusual exhibits of rare dwarf trees and the new Japanese gardens. Dr. Alvary exhibited a seven­ ty-seven year old 1 Pinus Thunbergi.
