C.--Fa vored treatment to Denny Mc- Lain, lucky he is still in the game, by the Atlanta Braves, doesn't help baseball's im age. McLain, demoted right ly to the Southern Associa tion when he couldn't win (he had a horrible ERA with Oakland), didn't do any bet ter in the Southern. Yet he was bought by the Braves and brought to At lanta and given starting as signments. One must assume he was bought as a gate at traction. That seems unfair to fans and players eager and trying to bring Atlanta a w i n n e r Big names unquestionably increase the gate. Vida Blue, who also isn't doing well this year, still draws crowds. But they may not be so big next year if he doesn't turn in a good overall year in 1972. The usual fate of a pitch er who loses his stuff is a spell in the minors until he regains his form. If contro versial or scandalized play ers are to be brought up for no other reason than to draw a few dollars at the gate, this is certain to hurt base ball. McLain's is not the only ,such case in recent years but it is the most obvious. One suspects the Braves are going to get what they deserve. Weather Blanket? Conway Leads Jake's Past Old Bridge 18-9 by Jerry Miller On Thursday night, Well and Pump beat Bavarian Haus for the second timeihis^ear, by a score of 5 to 2. T. Farr had a perfect night at (fie plate with 3 hits in 3 AB for Well and Pump. Bavarian Haus failed to hit again, and this told the story of the game. In the second game Carl's beat Parkview 17 to 10. C. Newkirk had 3 hits again, to move him up into the number 4 spot among the top ten hitters. F. Sorenson also had 3 hits, along with R. Smith's 5 RBI's. One surprise for Carl's has been the steady play of D. Birmingham, the catcher. Denny had a double and a home run to boost his average to an even .400. V. Freund played a heck of a game as he had 4 hits and 4 RBI's for Parkview. In the third game, Jake's surprised Old Bridge as they pounded out 24 base hits, in winning big by a score of 18 to 9. M. Conway had 4 base hits, 2 doubles and a triple, along with OUR NEW ON-THE-AIR PHONE NUMBER.... (312) -223-5555 1220 3 RBI's B. Oeffling, Jamieson, Meyer, Jaeger, and Weber all had 3 hits apiece for Jake's. T. Spasavich and B. Michels each had 3 hits for Old Bridge. The team from Richmond came up winners 6-2. The boys just couldn't get the big hit when it was needed. In the second game Sunday the 14 year old All Star team met Wonder Lake. McHenry sent Mike Winters to the mound and what a day for him.Mike pitched a no-hitter and, along with Bill Brogan, also hit a home run. Bill's homer came in the third inning with one mate aboard. Mike hit .his in the fourth. Mike wallred five men and had twelve strikeouts. McHenry won 4-0. M. Lehr started for Wonder Lake and went all the way, taking the loss. EARL'WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR, It is not unusual these days to read that some pro athlete packs his bag and goes home. He doesn't say a word to his coach or to the man who pays his fancy salary. There was a time when an athlete was happy to be handed a uniform by some big time team. SUDDEN THOUGHT It wasn't all Durocher's fault. Baseball isn't supposed to be such a rough game, but the disabled list grows. Watching the roller skating matches (we didn't watch 'em very long) makes us think they are trying to steal the show from the pro wrestlers. Not very clean sport for youngsters to watch. The Club Championship matches started Sunday at McHenry Country club. There will be four Sundays of sharp competition. Won't be able to see it all, but hope to get there for the third and fourth Sun days. It's something great to watch. H e r b " M c T a v i s h " Reihansperger is back on the mainland. He traveled through Europe in search of players to help his Cubs. He should have stayed home and scouted the County League. Several of the locals could help his team. IT WAS THI--S LONG! Saw a report in The Marquette County Tribune of Montello, Wisconsin about Bud Wilde being a winner in their big fish contest. The top bass 500 Mile Club Claims •« cHENRY YOUTH LEAGUE was caught by Bud - a 20- incher pulled out of Lawrence Lake. Congratulations, Bud. Why didn't you have a picture taken? Most fishermen do. And politicians are un mercifully throwing bad light on opponents. Nobody is all bad. In Youth League baseball last week, all three teams of All Stars were busy. The 15 year old team played Marengo in their first game of the Crystal Lakl invitational tourney. Dave Wickenkamp went to the hill for McHenry and pitched a great ball game in winning 4 to 1. The big hit in the game went _ to Gary Gilpin when he hit a two run double to put McHenry ahead to stay. L. Kundy started for Marengo, going all the way and took the loss. In the Saturday game the 15 year old team sent Mike Tonyan to the hill against Wauconda. Mike went all the way giving up only 4 runs but the fellows from Wauconda didn't give up any. McHenry went down to defeat 4-0. D. H e d g e p a t h s t a r t e d f o r Wauconda and went all the way for the victory. Hedgepath sure looked great. The game Sunday was rained out. The team will Coach "Hutch" is an artist. Never knew this was one of his many talents. You should see his sketch of "Sports Editor" on envelope addressed to us. Hat, cigar - the whole thing. Reading the news sometimes give us a pain. Those killings in Barrington Hills make us wonder about our so-called civilized world. MAJOR LEAGUE (HAWKS) - Manager - Jim Lennon, Coach - Dan Lennon. 1st row left to right, Mark Price, Bob Wegener, Tom Rodgers and Mike O'Halleran. 2nd row left to right, Jeff Lennon, Dan O'Brien, Eric Trier and Tim Zeller. 3rd row left to right, Jim Lennon, Mark Fairburn, Russ Weingart and Dan Lennon. Absent, Don Adams, Steve Adams. Throwing a bad light on others, without justification is hardly sporting. We can't remember when dirty politics didn't raise its ugly head, but always think the guy who throws mud should wash his hands. Haines, Wynveen, Sweeney Three more McHenry Cross Country team members joined the 500 mile club by running over 500 miles this year. Co-Captain George Haines, senior, of 813 Mill street has made this exclusive club for the second straight year. Haines, who has been a good steady performer since his sophomore year, is being counted on to lead the pack this year. A hard worker and a fine runner is also developing into a good team leader. Sophomore Kevin Wynveen, of 2710 W. Young, is a strong runner and a minor letter winner last year, could win a starting spot on the varsity. Kevin is the first sophomore this year to win a 500 mile T- shirt. Bruce Sweeney, of 716 Regner road, is the third senior to earn a 500 mile T-shirt this year. Bruce is being counted on to booster sports left by a fine group of seniors last year who were graduated last June. MAJOR LEAGUE (CONDORS) - Manager-Bill Fuiava, Coach • Mike Dancy, 1st row left to right, Dan Conway, Pat Teuber, Jeff Connor and James Weirich. 2nd row left to right, Tom Carey, Dave Miller, Mike Damiani and Clifton. 3rd row left to right, Bill Bryniarsld, Jeff Partenheimer, Dave Pliner and James Buenzli. 4th row, Bill Fuiava.
