Livestock waterers are a common source of easy-to- repair leaks. Even where your water loss isn't serious, muddy, water-soaked areas are a nuisance. ANIMALS ON PASTURE Be sure dairy cattle get adequate phosphorus and salt while on pasture. A good plan is to give growing heifers and milking cows free access to a mineral feeder which contains both salt and a high phosphorus mineral such as dicalcium phosphate. To help reduce the number of mosquitoes in home yards, follow these steps : (1) Eliminate standing water in such places as eave troughs, old tires, tin cans, children's toys, storm sewers, etc.; (2) Apply a water-base spray containing 1-percent malathion (2 ounces of 50- to 57-percent liquid concentrate per gallon of water) to shrubbery and tall grass - repeat the treatment every week or two if needed; (3) Keep the screens on doors and windows in good repair; (4) Hang plastic resin strips (2 by 10 inches) containing 20- percent dichlorvos (DDVP) - one Strip per 1,000 cubic feet, of space, or about one per room. These . strips will kill mosquitoes and flies for several weeks. Do not use these strips kitchens or other areas where food is handled. Do not use them in any room where infants, the ill, or aged persons are confined. A 0.1-percent pyrethrum space spray -- applied from a pressurized spray can - can be used for quick knockdown in place of the dichlorvos resin strips. Frequent treatments will be needed during problem periods. (5) When entering mosquito-infested areas, use a repellent. One of the most ef fective mosquito repellents is DEET (diethyltoluamide). (6) For quick knockdown at cookouts, ctdoor parties, or How Can I? BIHBKHIBHBB by Anne Ashley Q. How can I treat some musty smelling tea towels. A. By boiling them for several minutes in water containing two tablespoons of baking soda per quart. Then launder, using a bleach if necessary, ana dry in the sun. Q. What is the best way to saw a thin piece of metal with a hacksaw? A. Put the metal sheet bet ween two blocks of wood, clamp in a vase, and saw through this wood and metal. The wood will hold the metal firm, keeping the edgfc from bending with the strokes of your saw. Be sure your blade is inserted in your saw so that the cutting is done with a downward stroke. Q. How can I clean unglazed ceramic tiles, such as used on bathroom floors? A. Always wipe up im mediately any spilled medicines, paint or other such substances ~ then scour the spots with an abrasive powder. Unglazed tiles are very ab sorbent and such stains can, penetrate deeply and be very difficult to remove. These tile floors can usually be kept clean by wiping with a damp cloth or sponge, or water to which a softener has been added. Q. How can I remove road tar from the bottom of my car? A; Ordinary cooking lard works well for this. Rub it on briskly, using a dean, soft cloth, lelattfta4. for a couple of seconds ortJJN^irub off. Q. How^calHfcL make mushroom chowc A.Combine condense^cream of mushroom soup with one can of light cream, one cup of sauted sliced mushrooms anit two tablespoons of ligjmy sauted onions, and sieved Hard- boiled eggs. Heat and serve. It's good! Q. What can I do about scratches on dark-colored furniture? A. Try applying iodine to these, and when this has dried, rub over it with furniture polish - and usually the scratches will be almost invisible. Q. How can I repair chipped porcelain on my i^inge? A. There are pordelain glazes on the market for tnis purpose. The area to be repaired must be free of grease and dirt, and completely dry. Apply a thin coat of the glaze, wait thirty minutes then apply another coat. Keep repeating this routine until the damaged area is 'built up level with the surrounding surface. The trick is not to try to fill the chipped area with one single thick coat. Have some denatured alcohol on hand for use in wiping off any surplus. Q. How can I soften a stif fened chamois? A. By giving it a lengthy rinse in two quarts trf lukewarm water to which a tablespoon of olive oil has been added. Q. How can I prevent grease spots on plastered walls from "bleeding through" onto a new wallpaper or paint? A. By covering these areas with shellac before painting or papering them. Q. What can I do when I have inadvertently added too much salt to food while cooking it? A. Stretch a clean cloth tightly over the vessel and sprinkle a tablespoon of flour over the cloth. The flour will absorb the salt if allowed to steam for a few minutes. ROAD MONEY RELEASED Secretary of Transportation, William F. Cellini, has allocated almost $20 million from motor fuel tax collected on local sales during June. The money may be used by local government units for highway improvements and highway associated projects. Downstate counties received a total of $3,533,405. Cook county's share was $3,238,955. Townships and road districts were allocated $2,944,504. Cities received $9,422,414. STRICT LIVES! AnimlHs and poultry Con taining harmful substances rfifcy now be investigated, quarantined and restricted by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The authority is granted in a new law approved by Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie. The law also provides that each day in violation be regarded as a separate offense. Each county collector must place 1972 personnal^property t tax payments in a special escrow account, thereby making taxpayers eligible for full repayment if the tax is determined invalid. In ap proving the new law, Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie noted that the United States Supreme Court has not decided on the constitutionality of the measure, and urged all persons involved to continue making individual personal property tax payments under protest. AIDS SCHOOLS Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie has released funds to provide reduction in costs of tran sporting pupils to and from schpol. The governor granted $55,500 for distribution through the Secretary of Tran sportation. Funds from this release will go to tran sportation systems in Springfield ($43,500), Elgin ($10,000) and Pekin ($2,000). Everybody has *2.™ carpet. picnics, use either 0.1-percent pyrethrum vr 0.5-percent dichlorvos (dDVP) solution as an oil- or water-base, space spray. Spray the mist lightly beneath tables and chairs and into the air for a few feet around the area. Repeat the treatment as needed. OYSTERSHELL SCALE The second-generation crawlers will be hatching this next week. The first generation began earlier than normal this year. Many shrubs were in fested with new scale in late May and June. Treatment for these crawlers was often too late. If oystershell scale is a problem on lilac, birch, willow, or other tree and shrub species spray the infested areas with malathion. Apply treatments during the week of August 13 for the McHenry County or extreme northern Illinois area. Repeat in ten to fourteen days. SORGHUM-SUDAN Sorghum-sudan grass pastures are hard on horses. Horses maintained oof sorghum-sudan pastur^b sometimes develop irK_ ^ flammation of the kidneys and urinary system. BIGGEST AREN'T BEST Selecting gilts out of big litters doesn't improve litter size much. The best way to improve litter size is by doing a good job of feeding and managing the sow herd and by adopting a cross-breeding program. TEAT CUPS When replacing teat cup liners, check to see that they are designed for the metal shells you have on your milking machine. Make sure that the liners you buy have room to collapse within the shell. Replace liners when they start to lose their shape or show small cracks on the inside. Liners usually need to be replaced after 1,000 milkings.
