PAoc 3-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, AUGUST 18, 1972 in THE JAMES BATES HOME Display Bates Home Oct. 4 Holiday Hospitality Day, which is held in Woodstock, T3ct. 4from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is sponsored by the Woman's auxiliary of Memorial Hospital for McHenry County. Three homes will be opened to the public. The home of Mr. and Mrs. James Bates, 412 Blackberry drive, is located on a gently sloping, beautifully wooded three and a half acre site. This terrain is an ideal background for Mrs. Bates' description of the style of the house: ' 'woodsy- type, raised ranch with a split- level entry. The Bates family has lived in this home for four years and loves the life that it provides. Birds, deer, fox, raccoons (who sometimes, uninvited, share the sweetcorn crop) and also ants and spiders are their close neighbors. After the purchase of this acreage for their home, the next consideration was a desirable and suitable house plan, a plan which would fit into the landscape and maintain the feeling of "openness". Open ness on the inside aswell as the outside was a criterion. As you enter this home you are im mediately aware of this openness as the room dividing walls are held to a minimum and the expanse of glass to the outside provides unrestricted views. Balconies add to the spaciousness. The split level style is ap parent the moment you enter the front door. A few steps either up or down lead to the upper or the lower level. On the upper level you enter the breakfast room, then on to the kitchen. Before you leave the break fast room area be sure to note the intercommunications system. The utilitarian purpose of reaching out to the far corners of the house, the woods, and the meadow is easily un derstood. The unusual and pleasant result of this system is that it also, serves to bring the songs of the birds from the outside into the house. Just imagine Mr. Owl answering "Who-o-o. Also in this area is an open grill set into the wall which provides many delights for the family which has an interest in gourmet cooking. Next you come to the dining and living rooms. These rooms are separated by the use of a walnut planter. This planter is used for a cactus garden containing many interesting species. The lower level has a large room with a fireplace. From this room you may go to a large screened patio. This patio provides the out-of-door living for rainy or mosquito weather. * Visitors will find the Weeder group in this home. Nature's bounty in beautiful dried arrangements and bulk materials will be on display and available. MR. AND MRS. THOMAS M.
