Wednesday, Trayer Service, 7:30 p.m. Doss the alarm clock get you up? No, it merely tells you It's time to get up. Whether you get out of bed is a matter of discipline. Church bells don't bring anyone to church. They simply remind Christians where V® ought to be on a Sunday morning. The rest is a matter of discipline. Such discipline, whether it calls you to work or to worship, is fundamentally a trait of your own character. It begins with earnestness, it is strength ened by habit, it is directed toward any responsi bility or opportunity which you value. The value a person puts upon God and his own soul usually determines whether he worships each Sunday, or now and then. Put another way: the man who knows what worship and inspiration can mean in his life never is hesitant to get up and go. And, of course, discipline has special meaning for a Christian: those who lived and worked with Christ were DISCIPLES. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry UNANSWERED PRAYER There are many reasons given in the Bible for unanswered prayers. We are not referring to a prayer offered now and then. There may be many other reasons that the intermittent prayer is not answered. The unanswered prayer referred to is a petition offered by a person who is habitual and regular in prayer. It is the earnest request made to God by a believer. * One of the first reasons for unanswered prayer is an unhar- monious relationship between husband and wife. The Apostle Peter admonishes us that the husband must honor his wife as a Christian "that your prayers be not hindered" (1 Peter 3:7b). A rift or quarrel between husband and wife may render the prayers of either invalid. James warned of selfish prayers. "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your own lusts" (James 4:3). We should not take this verse to mean that we should never ask for anything personal from God. To ask for specific things from God will become the strength of our faith as we see God answer these direct requests. But James means we are not to pray selfish prayers. The prayer of request must, in the mind of the person praying, also be an anticipated revelation of God. Our prayers may go unanswered when we harbor an unforgiving spirit against another. Many Christians go without answers to prayer because they have wronged others; or have been wronged, and have failed to humble themselves and seek reconciliation (Matthew 5:22-24). Perhaps the greatest hindrance to God's power in prayer is our own unbelief (James 1:6,7). Belief and confidence in God must be established and maintained before one can haye a healthy prayer life. One must practice praying prayers which he can know when they are answered. The sin of unbelief is not unbelief itself but that we do not give God a chance to reveal Himself to us. His way of revealing Himself to mankind today is through answered prayer. When one clings to known sin within his life, his prayer will usually go unanswered. The apostle John said, "and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight" (1 John 3:22). When we pray we should go to God in aU humility. We should ask Him to reveal anything in our lives that is not pleasing to H?fa. We should then judge that conviction, confess it and forsake it. Prayer must be in all sincerity, simplicity and earnestness. Couple this with belief and God will hear and answer. "Ask , and it shall be given you" (Matthew7:7a). Bible Student Is Recognized Susan Tripp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Tripp of 802 Ringwood road, McHenry, was recognized as the outstanding student of 300 enrolled in vacation Bible school at First Baptist church. In addition to perfect attendance throughout the two-week school, Susan memorized thirty verses ot scripture, quoted from memory the Ten Commandments, learned the books of the New and Old Testaments in order and memorized Luke 6:31-36. This is in addition to the regular activities of each day. Susan was also praised for her exceptional cooperation, her positive attitude and her happy disposition.
