Yet each minute and each day is new and fresh, wait ing for us to grasp it, mold it, use it, and enjoy it. Each new moment should provide a lesson in pacing our lives so that we may truly live and appreciate life. Our reason for rushing and bustling is lack of understanding the principles of pacing. These principles are so elementary we often forget them too easily. There is a time and place for everything. A time for work, a time for prayer, and also there should be a time to appreciate the creations of God. When was the last time you paused to smell flowers in the garden? When was the last time you really listened to a bird sing, or stood in awe watching the sun rise? When was the last time you felt the rustle of the wind and wondered where it's been and where it is going? When was the last time you re newed your soul in appreciation of God's creation? Pacing and appreciation will add meaning and understanding to each day. Use your days wisely. Bishop Hill is a National His toric Site and one of Illinois' state memorials, under the administra tion of the division of parks and memorials, Department of Conser vation. The colony church, steeple building, blacksmith shop, colony store, post office and colony school are being restored with both state and private funds. Of particular interest is the role and attitude of modern Sweden towards this relic community and its ties with the Sweden of 130 years ago. Swedish historians are intensely concerned with what hap pened to Jansson and his 1,100 followers who left their shores as religious dissenters in the early 1840s to sail to the United States and establish a "Prairie Utopia" in what was then still "Indian coun try." ^ The Swedes are so dedicated to helping preserve the original Jans son records and artifacts that they sent Archivist Mara Eiche of the Riksarkivet (National Archives) to Bishop Hill to assist the Heritage Association in organizing and cata loguing for transfer the thousands of documents, letters and records to new facilities under construc tion at the colony steeple building, l a r g e s t o f t h e r e m a i n i n g b r i c k structures in the village. Ms. Eiche, a statuesque blonde with a friendly smile, did the groundwork for the project, talk ing to villagers who retain many of the original writings and docu ments as family heirlooms. Her work was coordinated by Uppsala University, through grants from Sweden's Royal Patriotic Society, the Royal Academy of Learned Societies, and the American-Scandi navian Foundation.
