C. -- The New York Yankees, whV- haven't done much since 1964. have managed to stir up interest in the American League race. |Jince neither Baltimore nor Detroit took the bit and ran with it, the Yankees got ideas. It's hot really that simple. Ralph Houk is a good man ager, always gets his gang going some time during the season. Yet writers were snipping at him only a month ago, as not doing the job. The snipping is now ended. For since the All-Star Game the Yankees have been a competing ball club and are playing winning ball. It's still hard for this ob server to see (in the person nel Houk has to work With) a pennant. But maybe the team can win by default. Boston is still in the race and that means September is certain to be an exciting month in the eastern Ameri can League. It should like wise be a profitable one for at least four clubs. Even Cleveland still had a math ematical chance in mid- August! The Yankees, if they re turn to former greatness, will stir up a lot of interest in baseball. FOOTBALL * * * By Pete Fritchie Washington, D. C. -- The gambling odds indicate Bal timore's Colts and the Minn esota Vikings will meet in the superbowl next January. That's especially interest ing because neither team was in the big game last January. The 1972 superbowl saw Dallas outdo Miami's Dol phins. Dallas, according to the odds, has a good chance and should play Minnesota in the National Football Conference playoff. But the Vikings are favored-5-2 while the odds go up to 7-2 for the champion Cowboys. In the American Confer ence, Baltimore's leading odds are also 5-2, Oakland, according to the gamblers, should be in the playoff with the Colts, and are rated 3-1 Miami, in this year's play off, and Kansas City, are ranked together in third place at 7-2. After those four teams, the odds jump sky- high, to 8-1 for Pittsburgh and Cleveland and then on up to 40-1 for Buffalo. In the National, after Minn esota and Dallas, the odds move up to 4-1 for San Fran- PAGE 7-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1972 Clean-up and Repair placing damaged floodlight recep- Increased surveillance of routine tacles. maintenance and cleanliness of Illi- Most of the damage that sky rockets repair bills at Lovejoy Monument and elsewhere results from public Vandalism.
