Hettermann's Wins League Championship By Jerry Miller Hettermann's won their 13th game of the year last Thursday night and captured first place in the softball league. They beat Bavarian Haus 11 to 4. The second game of the night saw Old Bridge beat Parkview 8 to 6. The win by Old Bridge gave them a 7 and 7 record, the same as Carl's. So on Tuesday night Old Bridge and Carl's had a playoff game to see who would make the playoffs. Old Bridge edged Carl's 13 to 12 to take fourth place in league Play- Members on Hettermann's championship team are: B. Oeffling, D. Hiller, W. Hiller, D. Bentz, L. Smith, M. Bentz, T. Freund, R. Wakitsch, C. Pierce, J. Schaefer, T. Oeffling, L. Freund, B. Schmitt, and their scorekeeper, Hank Hiller. Congratulations Hettermann's on a great team effort in winning the league title. The course will cover such topics as Legal and safety require ments; Knots and splices; Aids to navigation; Basic piloting techniques; Rules of the road for boaters and much more. Classes will be held every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. starting Sept. 26 and continuing for twelve suc cessive weeks. A certificate of completion will be awarded to You probably noted in Country Club News Friday that Ed Cepulis won the handicap club championship. Would like to have watched that play, but it isn't in the cards for us to see them all. Ed was a good athlete at MCHS. Seems to us that some of these fellows are good in all sports. Just naturals. It must be coordination. Some have it. Some don't. Congratulations, Ed. Keep swinging. It was a happy time last Friday afternoon as the Plaindealer crew honored Anna Frisby on her ninetieth bir thday. It was 56 years ago that Anna started reporting items to the Plaindealer. Made us feel like a kid - only 37 years to our credit. We loved it when Anna said she wouldn't believe her age if it wasn't for the Bible -- "and the Bible doesn't lie." Hadn't seen Joe Stenger in many years until Sunday morning coming out of church. As we chatted with Joe and Lillian Stilling, Joe asked about Math Laures. We didn't know Math was standing about 10 feet away. Was that a surprise! Had a short visit with Math and his wife, and his sister Mrs. Frank Weingart. Mrs. Laures didn't like the cool air here Sunday -- too much of a change from their Florida climate. all ^ persons successfully completing the course. Registration for the small boat seamanship course and other courses in the McHenry adult evening school program will be held from Sept. 11 through fourteenth from 7 to 9 p.m. at McHenry high school West campus, 4724 Crystal Lake road, McHenry, or phone the adult evening school office at 385-7900. We both agreed it would be a good idea to go back 50 years. Forty years for a real Old Timer --Huh! The Yankees took two-ffom our White Sox, then came Wilbur Wood to shut 'em out in the third. It seems to figure that we owe Randy Meyer two bucks and he owes us one. And, it also figures that Wilbur Wood will pitch three games in the World Series. Hats off to you happy Cub fans. That marvelous Greek, Milt Pappas, pitched a no-hit, no-run game. Drove down to Marchetti's Parkview Villa on Route 12 Labor Day to watch Margie Koffend ride in a real good horse show. In case you don't know Margie, she is one of the gals who put the Plaindealer together. There were some beautiful horses in the show and riders who knew how to handle them. We were surprised to see Attorney Sam Diamond riding in the show. He put his quarter horse over the fences in good style. Being an old Pony Boy, we took special interest in the show. It was something dif ferent and a real treat. It is once again time for the youth to get saddled up and ride out to our new club arena at Thunderbird Hunt Club on Rte. 31 just north of Crystal Lake. The Chuck Wagon Riders Saddle Club is giving the kids a day to remember. On Sept. 24, 1972, the club will sponsor their 4th annual "All Youth" horse show. There will be a lovely high point award for both boy and girl of the day. Several new and several old games are on the show bill for the day. One trophy and six ribbons are being given per class. An electric timer will be used in all the speed events, which will save a lot of time. Lunch break will find our lunch stands on the grounds. There will be presentation of ihe Flag and Club Colors. We are encouraging all riders to participate. For further information contact Show Chairman, Gerald Schiller, 815-385-1691, or Show Secretary Bonnie Goldman, 815-459-1212. The Chuck Wagon Riders Saddle Club is a chartered non-profit organization. Three of the most unsafe boating practices are BOW RIDING, GUNNEL RIDING, AND RIDING ON THE BACK OF THE SEAT. BOW RIDING: Though it appears to be great fun can have very ' serious con sequences if the rider falls overboard. The absence of a bow rail, firmly attached, makes the possibility of falling overboard a distinct hazard. Bow riders usually fall dead ahead of the boat rather than on one side or the other. Boats even at slow speeds generally can not stop short enough to avoid striking the bow rider that has fallen into the water. Steering around the victim would not in many cases be successful because a boat does not steer like an automobile, but reacts much more slowly. GUNNEL RIDING: May be a hazard both to passengers and the operator. A passenger riding on the gunnel has a 50-50 chance of survival if he falls overboard providing the operator does not turn the wrong way swinging the propeller towards the victim. But what about the operator sitting on the gunnel? If he falls overboard he usually pulls the wheel in the direction of the fall. This reaction puts the boat into a hard turn. At high speeds, a hard turn creates enough centrifugal force to throw the occupants out of the boat or render them tem porarily helpless. In either case you have one or more people in the water and a runaway boat. Riding on the seat back: Boats were constructed with the controls conveniently located to the operator's seat. Operators sitting on the seat back must bend down to reach the controls. If the seas are high and turbulent or the operator is bouncing around from normal movement of the boat in the water the controls are not always going to be easy to reach. If your boat is running in the vicinity of other boats and a collisibn situation arises, the few seconds it takes to get to the controls may be the diffference between a collision or avoiding one. The above described situations can under federal and state law be considered the reckless or negligent operation of a motorboat. If the operator runs his boat so that it en dangers life, limb, or property he could be punished under federal law by a fine for as much as $2,000 or a year in federal prison, or both. Avoid the chance of taking one's life or receiving a fine such as this by using common sense afloat, keeping you and your passengers inside of the boat, and observing the rules of the road.
