Smith, Chairman McCLORY REPORTS i From W ashington w The median family income of residents of the 12th district of Illinois (soon to be the 13th) is $12,000 compared to the me dian family income of $11,000 for residents of the State of Illinois at large. TOis was fcgptight out in a Census Bur eau report for the year 1970, recently released. Other characteristics of the population of our district show that in 1970 there were 22, 000 Negroes, 400 American In dians, 540 Japanese, and 250 Chinese as compared to 438, 886 white residents. White per sons represented 94.8 percent of the population, while the whole State of Illinois was re presented as 86.6 percent white. The 12th district!* composed of larger families, on an aver age, than the rest of the state as a whole. Of the 127,000 civilian males 18 years of age and over in the district, 65,000 or more than 50 percent were veterans, The comparable figure for the %t*te was 45 percent. Of this number, 10,328 district veterans had served during the Vietnam conflict, a percentage of 8.1 com pared to Illinois as whole, which had a figure of 6.6 percent. Also, the male population in cluded veterans of the Korean conflict (10.3 percent); World War H (22.4 percent); and World War I, (2.4 percent). Very like him, ! very like him." ; New Fieldman Appointed Folr Area Land Bank David Linden, 25, a fieldman for the Federal Land Banks of St. Louis since June 1, has assumed the managership pf the Federal Land Bank Association of Woodstock. Linden succeeds Robert Coots, manager since 1967, Kenneth Denman, Lake Villa farmer who is president, said in announcing the change. Mrs. Faye Todd is the assistant m a n a g e r o f t h i p f a r m e r - directed organization that provides long-term loans to farmers at low interest rates. The organization is controlled by farmers with persons ob taining loans providing funds for the capital stock. Coots is the new regional supervisor for the Federal Land Banks of St. Louis, suc ceeding Donald Nelson, DeKalb, veteran agricultural leader who held the same post for many years. Coots will be in charge of FLBAs at Amboy, Freeport, Morrison, DeKalb, Joliet and Woodstock. Linden, native of Bradford in Bureau county, was born and raised on a grain and livestock farm. He received his Bachelor's degree in agriculture at the University of Illinois in 1969. After working two years with the Hyster company in purchasing, he returned to the University of Illinois, where he obtained his Master's Degree in business administration. Since June, Linden has worked as a fieldman for the Federal Land Banks Si St. Louis. He and his wife, Rowene, have a three-year-old daughter, Louise. They expect to move to Woodstock this month. According to the Census report, 35.5 per cent of the districts residents had completed high school with 1 percent having completed four years or more of college. The major industry of the 12th district is manufacturing, with wholesale and retail trade second, and professional and re lated services third. Most families live in houses valued from $15,000 to $20, 000 (26.4 percent) in contrast to 20 percent in the state as a whole. The second largest grotq? (16,271 families or 21.1 percent) live in houses valuedat $20,000 to $25,000 as compared to 17.5 percent for the whole state. The third largest number is 15,200 (19.7 percent) who five in dwellings valued at $25,000 to $35,000 compared to 19.0 percent for the state as a whole. According to the Census report, the 12th district reflects fewer residents 18 years and over than in the rest of Illinois--63.7 percent compared to 65.7 percent. Unlike the state as a whole, there are far more men than women in the 12th dis trict: 239,110 males as com pared to only 223,987 females.
