PAGE 17-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1972 You And Your Pet With people, good manners are often the secret to good companionship. It is the same witfi dogs. They become good companions to people when they learn good manners. And good canine manners involve obediance to simple commands such as heel, sit, stay and come. For a puppy, age six to seven months is the ideal time to start training. As little as 10 minutes of training in the morning and evening can produce a well- trained dog. Equally im portant, the training can save the pet's owner from many awkward and embarrassing situations. Uninterrupted daily lessons are essential and you should start with simple tasks which the puppy can perform. Good manners are not taught overnight. They are the results of daily practice over a period of time until the dog un derstands his commands and responds willingly. Before you begin training, first consider your dog's per sonality. Some dogs are shy and timid, while others are overbearing or stubborn. Bear in mind that timid dogs need lots of encouragement and gentle handling with a soft voice. What can you reasonably expect from a well-trained dog? Let's look at some of the more familiar commands and see. "Heel" is the command used to get your dog to walk quietly without forcing or urging, at your left side no matter how fast you move. When commanded to "sit", your dog must promptly assume the sitting--position; squarely on both hips. When he has mastered this routine, he can assume the sitting position whether he is walking or lying down. When your dog is com manded "down", he must drop immediately to a lying position. He should be able to do this whether he is heeling, sitting, standing, running or walking. At the command "stay", your dog should remain in the position he held until it was given. The command may be given while your dog is stan ding, sitting, or lying down. When your dog is called, he must immediately come to you. When he reaches you he must sit in front of you, facing you, awaiting further orders. Remember, your voice tone is the single most important element in training your dog. Initial dog obedience can be taught indoors. When your dog begins to obey your commands, start training him in areas such as shopping centers and parks. Get him in the habit of working under various conditions. When you begin teaching your dog a new lesson at home, do so without an audience or the distraction of radio or television. You should always use the same command for the same exercises - without any ad ditional words. Your dog only understands the sounds of vowels in your commands, and he learns to associate a par ticular sound with a certain exercise. Food bribes should not be given during training. Yet, we all appreciate rewards for our good work and our dogs are no exception. When the training period is over (and it should end on a lesson your dog does well), reward him with his favorite treat. He will look forward eagerly to the next training session. The secret of training any healthy animal is patience and perseverance. By patience I mean that you should un derstand that your dog is not being disobedient if he is slow to pick up your commands. Perseverance, of course, means sticking with the lesson until your dog understands. Dogs are never too old to learn obedience. It is best to ask your local veterinarian" for more detailed dog training literature or perhaps you and your dog may want to enroll in a class. A dog trained to accept discipline and obedience in his early impressionable period will continue to learn from experience for the nest of his life. DR. (From the District 15 Ad ministrative Office) How many times have you asked your child what he did in school today? And was his reply "Nothing" or "A bunch of stuff" or "Ate lunch and played games"? Not very satisfying answers when you're won dering what your educational system is up to. And not very helpful if you're trying to think of ways to carry his school learning experiences into your home. Well, now there is a way for you to learn more about your educational system, to share learning experiences with children and to enjoy yourself at the same time - The Com munity Involvement Program. How can I help in the Classroom? There are so many activities volunteers can participate in - all of which mean an enriched learning experience for children - it would be impossible to list them all here. For example, there are clerical jobs such as completing attendSnce forms or filing instructional materials. Or you can work \ directly with children as you \ead them stories or help them play educational games. If you have unusual hobby, you can be "guest speaker" and show the students some of your work. What are the qualifications for a Parent Volunteer? The basic requirements are simple. You should: -Enjoy working with children -Have an interest in education and the community. -Feel a commitment to the goals of the community in volvement program. -Want to help. -Be dependable and in good health. As you can see, it is very easy to qualify-and the rewards are great. When can I start? Right now- by volunteering your services and by offering any suggestions you have to help teachers plan a more efficient program. You can also contact your friends and encourage them to par ticipate. . If you are interested in working with the children and staff of our District 15 Schools, please call any of our principals or Administration Center, 385- 7210.
