MARGARET O'NEIL Clerk of the Court (Published Sept. 13,20 & 22, 1972) Airmail Best Way To Travel; Postal Service The U.S. postal service is telling its customers there is a better way to fly than first class, and the nation's major airlines are in hearty agreement. For letters, that is. September is airmail month and the postal service is being aided in the promotion by most airlines who say that sending important letters out of town by first class instead of airmail is like sending business executives to important meetings on standby tickets. "First class mail often goes by air - but not always - and the handling airmail receives before and after flight is what makes the difference in time of delivery", Postmaster Leroy Smith said. Promotion kits containing various information about mailing and methods to im prove rapid delivery of im portant mail have been sent to all major mailers by the McHenry post office. The same type kits have been distributed throughout the nation. "What you save in money, you lose in speed and reliability", Postmaster Smith says about the use of first class postage for distant mailing. "Airmail gets sorted and processed before all regular mail including first class let ters. This gives airmail all the advantages a person would get from skipping the check-in line", he said. He suggested that airmail stickers be placed on the en velopes to aid in proper marking and separation. He also emphasized the use of zip code and to mail as early as possible for best results. "One particular reminder", he said, "is that airmail 'White Top' boxes are at various locations for specially scheduled pickups".
