They lost to the state ranked Tigers 15 to 43 and defeated Elgin 24 to 35. Sophomore John Mclnerney showed a lot of promise as he was the first Warrior across the finish line. Other top Warrior runners were Tim Tonyan and Geo Haines. McHenry Sophs won both of their meets, defeating the host Tigers 17 to 44 and Elgin by a perfect score 15 to 50. O'Halleran, Reilly, Talbot and Afeld were the first four rnners to cross the finish line. In the Freshman meet McHenry easily defeated Crystal Lake 19 to 42. Pepping, Schuster, and Boyer were the first three finishers for the Warriors. Institute Strikes Out At Trapping Cruelties PAGE 7-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27. 1972 Over 30,000,000 animals are trapped annually to satisfy the "barbaric vanity of humans," according to Belton P. Mouras, president of the Animal Protection Institute of America. "What is equally, if not more, horrendous," says the head of the Sacramento-based organization/ "is that 90 per cent of these animals are captured in steel-jaw leghold traps which crush paws and break bones yet leave the animal alive and in agony." API has instituted a national campaign against trapping cruelties, a campaign en compassing importation bans on furs taken in such traps and a widespread humane education and publicity program. Trapping is touted for various reasons, continues Mouras - for profit, sport, game management. "Yet, upon examination, these arguments fall apart." "Almost any other em ployment, given identical ef fort. would be more profitable," asserts the animal welfare veteran. The 1970-71 estimated price for opossum pelts was 35 cents each, for raccoons $1.12; with "the bulk of the profit going to furriers and numerous middlemen." According to Mouras, "sport" normally entails wholesome competition and a contest of skills, conditions totally tacking in the torturous (for the animal) activity of trapping. The argument of trapping as a tool of game management, declares the API president, completely ignores the concept of natural selection and the food supply-predator cycle. "Traps are indiscriminate and thus do not control surplus animals as trappers contend. A set trap will catch any animal - wild or domestic, fur animal or pet - that steps into it." As a service of API's anti- trapping campaign, brochures are available on request. Send inquiries to the Animal Protection Institute, P.O. Box 22505, Sacramento, California 95822. Former McHenry Man Receives State Honor Harold Nelson, assistant professor of medical technology at Sauk Valley college, was named "Illinois Medical Technologist of the Year" recently the Illinois Medical Technologists' association. He is a former McHenry resident and an MCHS graduate. Nelson, who joined the college faculty in 1967, also has a total of twenty-one years of experience as chief ^medical technologist at St. Mary's hospital in DeKalb and Com munity General hospital in Sterling. The award was based on Nelson's contributions to laboratory medicine during the year including "his interest in maintaining high standards in laboratory medicine through education." Also cited were his con tributions to his community which currently * include president of the Black Hawk Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease association: chairman of the Sterling-Rock Falls Chapter of the American Red Cross; a member of the executive committee of the Peoria Regional Blood program ; and a member of the council of Messiah Lutheran church in Sterling. Sauk Valley College president, Dr. Edward J. Sabol, com menting on the honor, said, "Mr. Nelson's contributions to his field have long been recognized by us at Sauk Valley, ana we are most pleased that those con tributions ere now receiving state-wide attention." When politicians forget principles of government in order to gain votes, repre sentative government inevi tably loses ground. DORKIE'S BEEF & EGGER 4213 W. THIS WEEK ONLY. . . SEPT. 27 thru OCT. 3r 1972 AS CHILDREN, we were taught that there is a bit of beauty even in the unseem ly. To illustrate the point, we were told that a frog's eyes are jewels cased in an unbecoming package. (Mama frog would take issue with this, seeing her warty off spring as a complete prince charming even before being kissed by a perplexed, beau tiful, fairy-tale princess.) . NOW AND AGAIN TV pres ents programming which is of such interest and quality that it appears a jewel when contrasted to other programs, especially re-runs. Thank you, ABC, for the extensive coverage of the Summer Olympics--a jewel. HOPPING FROM the un political Olympics--one has the uneasy, sad feeling that the games are becoming more and more political--to the recent GOP convention, one must admit it was more en joyable than other political jamborees this year. - ONE REASON for the in terest could be that the pace was so nippy that anchor men on network news teams AMONG THE SICK Mrs. Ronald (Kathy) Zank, 1308 W.
