Knaack totaled 17 yards in 5 carries in the 7-2 loss to the Broncos. (STAFF PHOTO-W A YNE GAYLOED) Bronco 7-2 Win Over Warriors Marked By "No Play" Decision The biggest theft since the Brinks" robbery took place last Friday night at McCracken Field as the Barrington Broncos edged out the McHenry Warriors by a score of 7 to 2. The big event took place with 5:18 remaining in the third period as the Warriors were on the march. Mark Bentz caught what seemed to everyone a pass that was complete before stepping over an official that had slipped in the mud, and was out of bounds. To the amazement of all, it was ruled an incomplete pass. This brought a wave of protest from the Warrior bench. Then after a conference by the four officials, they ruled it "No play" and gave the Warriors the opportunity to start over again. This is the first time I ever saw a "No Play" in football. In checking the rule book, there is no ex planation, or is there provided in the book a place for a "No Play". I am sure that even Howard Cosell would have been tongue tied on that one. " The Warriors kicked off and after two plays Russ Grover intercepted a pass on the 28. Failing to move the ball, Wayne Johnson boomed a kick deep in Barrington territory. The Broncos moved the ball to the warrior one, where Cole fumbled and McHenry took over. Both teams failed to move the ball with any consistency, due to the mud on the west side of the 50 yd., line. Late in the second quarter the Broncos made their move. With junior halfback Tom Rife eating up yardage the Broncos moved to the Warrior 8 with seconds remaining in the half. Q.B. Burke then passed to Bill Jarret who stole the ball from Jy BEAUTIFUL ' McHenry Country Club o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o -OPEN TO THE PUBLIC- SERVING: LUNCHEONS DAILY 11:30 - 3:00 DINNERS TUES. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Hurricanes Continue Winningways With 14-0 Win Over I.C. Marian Central opened conference play by defeating Immaculate Conception of Elmhurst 14-0. On the opening kickoff Marian Central forced an I.C. fumble and on the first play from scrimmage scored on a pass from John Feffer of Crystal Lake to Gary Shastal was good, giving Marian a 14-0 lead which was sufficient for victory. Late in the second period Immaculate Conception threatened but was held off by a staunch Marian defense lead by Pat Conerty of Harvard, Dave. Adams of McHenry, and John Dalton of McHenry. The second half saw offense play see-saw with the Marian defense preventing any I.C. drive. Standout on pass defense was newcomer Steve Maxson of McHenry who is playing football this year after having had heart surgery a year ago. In the second half Marian defense held I.C. to 15 yards rushing and 58 yards passing. Marian Central now is 3 to 0 for the season which is its best start since 1963. The Hurricanes face a strong Benet team this Saturday at Lisle. Game Statistics First Downs: Marian, 7; I.C. 10. Yards rushing: Marian, 130; I.C. 106. Yards passing: Marian, 163; I.C. 115. Total Yards: Marian, 293; I.C. 221. Scoring: Shastal, 33 yard pass from Feffer; Shastal, Kick good; Feffer, 90 yard run; Shastal, Kick good. Bavarian Haus- 1972 Playoff Champs two McHenry defenders for the T.D. Griffing's kick was good and Barrington led 7 to 0 at the half. In the third quarter as mentioned previously the Warriors started to march the ball through the Barrington line. This (five was stopped by the "unusual" call by the of ficials. Barrington took over and marched to the Warrior ten, where a field goal attempt by Griffing was wide. In the 4th quarter after a poor Barrington punt had put the Warriors in good field position they moved to the Broncos 14 yd., line when the Broncos held. After three downs got the Broncos nowhere, Burke ran the ball out of the end zone for an automatic safety making the score 7 to 2. McHenry made another move late in the period but an interception snuffed out the rally, and Barrington ran out the clock for the win. The Warriors showed great improvement. Ttiey had glue on their hands as they did not fumble. Again pass in terceptions hurt. The Broncos picked off three, that stopped Warrior scoring drives. On defense they were tough. Although Rife, Barrington halfback, made a lot of yar dage, the only dent on the scoreboard was that pass late in the second quarter. With the defense going great, the offense has bogged down. By Jerry Miller Bavarian Haus defeated. Hettermann's 6 to 5 last Wednesday night to win the playoff championship. Het termann's won the first game of the three game series. Bavarian Haus then bounced right back to win the second contest 8 to 6. The stage was set for the final game of the series to be played Sept. 20. Bavarian Haus scored 2 runs in the top of the first inning. Hettermann's came right back to score two runs and made the score 2 to o after one inning of play. Neither team was able to score in the second and third inning, so the score remained let's hope they can put it altogether next Friday night at Dundee. Let's show them, Warriors, you're a better team than a won 1 lost 2 outfit. Statistics: Hettermann's 2, Bavarian Haus 2 after three innings. In the top half of the fourth inning, Bavarian Haus scored 4 runs to take a 6 to 2 lead. The score then remained Bavarian Haus 6, Hettermann's 2 at the end of 6M> innings of play. Hettermann's came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Bavarian Haus hung on to win by a score of 6 to 5. Jim Meyers pitched a great game for Bavarian Haus as he held Hettermann's to a mere 5 hits. When you hold a team like Hettermann's to only 5 hits, with all the power they have, you know you're doing great. The members on the winning Bavarian Haus team are Den Meyers, Jim Meyers, Rich Meyers, Dave Smith, Den Smith, Bill Brennan, John Michels, Don Harris, Bob Harris, John Huemann, Gary Snell, Tom Fowler, Vic Freund, Ray Franklin, Manager Si Meyers, and bat boys, Jeff, John and Joe Meyers. Congratulations Bavarian Haus on a fine playoff series. The McHenry Hornets scoring machine moved into high gear again Sunday at Round Lake high school where the Hornets met the Round Lake Spartans. The big blue machine rolled to a 44 to 6 victory over Round Lake. The scoring was equally divided with Steve Mai, John Meurer, each scoring once, Dave Crook for two, and Mike Tollifson for three touchdowns. McHenry ran the opening kickoff for a touchdown only to have the play called back for holding. On the next play McHenry scored again, only to have the touchdown called back again. Still not to be denied a score Dave Crook ran for a touchdown. Later in the first half Mike Tollifson rolled to his right on a quarterback keeper and raced 18 yards for the score. First half - McHenry, 12 - Round Lake, 0. The Hornets seem to be a second half team, having scored a total of 73 points in the last three games, all in the XfcY ¥11? T* TTOTr^Ol? Cars, bikes and what not have been parked in their yard by people going to the football games. What amused the Webers was having Kevin Weiss paddle his canoe down the creek and park it at the Weber home. They liked Kevin's mode of transportation and resour cefulness. The Chamber of Commerce "Fun Fair" drew a crowd to the park Sunday. We know two grandchildren who had a great time as long as grandpa's change held out. Came home with two pocketsful of treasured prizes. Mike Brown was trying to promote elephants. Not a donkey in sight. The kids thought Tom Bir mingham was a great guy when they won two funny-laughing- face pillows at his booth. Sat on a bench for a while and watched the kids flock to the old fire engine. Made us think of Harry Conway, who thought it would be great fun for the kids. Harry wasuright. His heart was big. X EARL WALSH- So I Hear SPORTS EDIT0RJ Bill DeVries - "Cub-Cap- Bin" - phoned to tell us a thing or two about not writing a column for last Wednesday. Tried to explain that we left McHenry County for the first time, but no excuse went over. As if it wasn't enough to have Cub fan Bill Kreutzer across the driveway from our home, we have those i two little darlings, Mary Beth Gonde second half. John Meurer raced 70 yards for a score with the kickoff Dave Crook scored his second T.D. and Mike Tollifson added two more. Round Lake would not quit and scored on a 75 yard pass play. This was the first time in 11 quarters of football that the Hornet goal line had been crossed. Out standing on defense were Mike Gibbons, Nick Baldocchi, Tom Lundelius, Louie Thorns, Jim Cox, Geo. Hoffman, John Weyland. Next Sunday the Hornets are at home playing Palatine. See you at West Campus Lightweights, 12:45 - Heavyweights, 2:00. Scores to date: McHenry, 0 Highwood, 19. and Margi Ruth, to put up with. They ha-ha 'cause the Sox didn't finish any higher than the Cubs. Both second place finishes. Tried to explain to those gals that all the real experts predicted first place for the Cubs and a way-down spot for the Sox. We just try to explain. Joe Etten is one who thinks t|ie Sox should have brought up those rookies sooner. Some of them will stick next year. Anybody think of a motto for next year? Like: The Cubs will win no more •til 1974. Still think that if each of us watched those speed and directional signs at the right of the road, we wouldn't have many problems. A MEMOTOS.I.H. Gary Collins lifted weights all week to build up his strength to lift you up to the press box, and you failed to show up. Also because of your ribbing, none of the gang ate before the game, waiting for the "goodies". Collins even had to buy his own popcorn. The place wasn't the same, so do hope you'll join us for the Zion game. The above note was enclosed with Dick Rabbitt's report on the Barrington game. It was really a disap pointment not to be able to attend the game, but a special meeting came up that we had to attend. Dick, please urge Gary to continue his exercise. Will be there for the Zion game with some rye crisp. And somewhere men are laughing, And somewhere children shout. But there is no joy in Chicago The White Sox have struck out. This one came in the mail. Seems to us we read it some place else, but do not know who to credit. Send more. But, let's make 'em original. McHenry, 33 - Rolling Meadows, 0. McHenry, 35 - Fox Lake, 0.
