PAGE 10-PLAINDEALER- Church Pays Property Tax Prior To Nov. I One of the city's largest taxpayers, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, has cooperated with the city by paying in advance more •FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1972 than $1.5 million in property taxes. The church, which serves as the international headquarters for the Christian Science denomination, presented $1,506,586 to the city on Sept. 29, . more than $300,000 above what it paid last year. The city asked a few large taxpayers to pay their taxes in advance to alleviate a potential fiscal crisis caused by the freeze of school aid funds by the state board of education. This was the second con secutive year that the church has paid property taxes in September which were not due until Nov. 1. For many years the church has paid taxes on all property which is not used for actual worship purposes. Eight of our states do not require a college degree for its teachers. Each day is a spin of the wheel of chance, and your destiny goes along with the spot where the ball lands or the place where the cards fall. Is this true? Are we all really helpless victims of circum stance? If you think so, reconsider! We make our own decisions! Sometimes they are right, some times they are wnjfntf. but they belong to us--not to chance. Per haps that is why we all need help, inspiration and self-dignity. We need to know that as God's children, our faith comes only as a gift from Him. Where do we find all this? Well, we start to find it in the Church. Shown the way, the rest is up to us. All are invited. A Halloween party is in the wings and promises to be a lot of fun. It will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. in the League room of the church. Much effort has gone into plans and a good turnout is expected. The Bible Speaks Virgfe L. Chappell, Pastor First Baptist Church, McHenry BODY AND SOUL Man is a being, created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26, 27). There are certain characteristics of God which man possesses. Man did not create a god with certain characteristics which he himself possessed but Jehovah created man, bestowing upon him certain qualities which no other creature possesses. Man is the created and God is the creator. Though man is often spoken of as possessing a soul, a more accurate assertion would be that he is a soul. Man is body. Man is soul. Jesus spoke of man as being both spirit and flesh (John 3:6). The complete Biblical concept does not dissect man. He is com plete body and soul. Man serves God with body and soul. He sins against God with body and soul. When a man is "saved" (Acts 16:30) or "born again" (I Peter 1:23, John 3:3), it is a total ex perience of body and soul (Galatians 2:20). However, there is a time of separation for the body and the soul. This time is at death. We speak of this period as being an "in termediate state". It is that period of time from one's death until Christ returns (for the Christian) or until the end of the millennial reign (for the non-Christian). The Apostle Paul speaks of this time as a period of being "unclothed" (2 Corinthians 5:1-4). This separation of body and soul at death is not a permanent separation. Again, Paul exclaims to the doubter that which is "planted" (the physical body at death) must also come forth from the ground (I Corinthians 15:36ff). There is not one soul in a grave today! We do not wish to be disrespectful concerning the physical body at death. It is a sacred object. It was created by God. It is that body in some farm that is to be resurrected at an appointed time in the future. One of the sternest judgments by God was directed upon a people because of their disrespect for the body of the dead. (Amos 2:1-3) But at death the soul leaves the body to enter the first areas of our eternal dwelling place. (Luke 16:19ff). To be absent from the (physical) body is to be "present with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:8) The physical body is "planted" (I Corinthians 15) in death while the soul ascends to be with God. Jesus Christ spoke to the penitent thief on the cross, "Today, thou shalt be with me in Paradise." (Luke 23:43) Hundreds of people witnessed the disposal of a physical body in a prepared grave, but the soul of that thief was with the Lord in Paradise! . We, if we are Christians, ought not to despair at the death of a loved one )Thessalonians 4:13ff). Certainly tears of sorrow are iii order. Even Jesus wept at the grave of his dear friend Lazarus (John 11:35). But these tears are expressions of our loss. He explained his new life following the funeral of his son, 'While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said 'who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that my child may live?' But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."
