CONSUMERS AND NEWSPAPERS Everything about a newspaper is consumer-ori ented. That's why both men and women consumers read newspapers more regularly and carefully than anything else. That's because newspapers are the FULL in formation medium. More information on consumer matters is being published in newspapers today than at any time in our nation's history. Editorial writers, reporters, columnists and special feature pages and articles comment regu larly on consumer issues. Advertisements provide facts and information to help them shop better, save money, use time wisely, and live better year after year. Classified advertising helps consumers many important ways, assisting in such major events in an average person's lifetime as helping find a job, a home, and a car. It's the BMW from the Bavarian Motor Works of Munich, West Germany. More than 2000 gold medals. 206 world records. 27 of them still hold today. Vou can spot a BMW right away because they look different from any other motorcycle around. For one thing, the unique engine layout gives BMW a characteristic silhou ette. A pair of transverse, hor izontally opposed cylinders. That's a mouthful alright. So exactly what does it mean. It means that in the BMW engine the cylinders are on the same horizontal plane, at right angles to the engine housing. From far off, that's what you see sticking out on each side. There is good reason for this unusual construction. This way the cylinders are in a perfect position for cooling -- out in the wind as one rides. The center of gravity is low to contribute to BMW's perfect weight distribu tion. And since the pistons sim ultaneously move against each other, both in, then both out, alternately, the movement that would cause vibration is balanced and BMW runs more smoothly than any other motorcycle ever could. A great plus in comfort for long distance travel, and an important factor in reducing engine wear. What else makes the best motorcycle in the world unmis takable? Try to find a drive chain. You can't. Power is transferred from engine to rear wheel by means of a drive-shaft, just like an automobile's. Now that's really one up on ordinary motorcycles. If you don't know, a chain must constantly be adjusted, because it is alternately tightened and slackened during the ride and soon becomes loose. A dirty time-wasting job. BMW's shaft-drive, on the other hand, is permanently sealed inside the right rear THE BMW 750 tooling along the highway shows the cylinder arrangement characteristic of all BMW motorcycles. Fokker D VII's of the famous Red Baron's fighter squadron, and achieved the first of their many world records in 1919 with a high-altitude flight. Five years later, in 1923, the company constructed their first horizont ally opposed twin motorcycle engines. Many models have followed this first prototype, including one designed for the Desert Fox, General Rommel, for his African campaign. A monster of a side car version with 8 gears, a reverse, and separate drive for the third wheel.: All of them show the two basic ideas: the flat twin and the shaft. The latest BMW motorcycles touring our country today now appear in several beautiful colors in addition to the traditional BMW black. swing arm. So it stays perfectly clean. And it is so ingeniously constructed that it automatic ally compensates for the length variation necessary during motion. So, it never needs ad justing. The shaft-drive is no bother as long as the machine lasts. And because BMW's are so well made, that is usually a very, very longtime. You may be asking, if all that is so good, why aren't the other manufacturers doing it, too. Because the best is hard to imitate. The Russians and the Japanese have tried it. Without success. Even America's Harley- Davidson has an imitatit.i BMW in its museum in Milwaukee which they built on government orders in 1942. The Bavarian Motor Works began in 1917, building aircraft engines.
