00/vT PLAY HATCHES FIRE POSTER WINNERS -- In observance of Fire Prevention Week, which was concluded Oct. 14. students of the James C. Bush elementary school in Johnsburg made posters depicting many of the ways the public might help to prevent fire. Grand prise winners of the "Spark If potter" poster contest, from left, are Brian Mur phy, fifth place; Sara Lindquist, second; Ron Kaas, fourth; Mark Anderson, first and Heidi Bednarczyk, third. Other Fire Prevention week activities included writing letters to Smokey the Bear, memorizing the local Are department phone number, studying the origin and uses of fire and making litter bags. HELPING PAWS FOR ADOPTION--This beautiful Mack and white female kitty, under l year old, is being cared for at 385-1458. Won't somebody offer it a good home? If not, the cat will have to be put to sleep to make room for many others for which Helping Paws volunteers are offering tem porary homes. By Julie Ann Boelter If your dog or cat is lost, this is the place to look after you have called the McHenry county vet at the Woodstock courthouse. Then there are vets in your area, and a call to the newspaper classified depart ment where you will place your own ad in addition, just in case they miss our column. Then there are prayers which you can say. Have you really been paying enough attention to your animal? With winter coming on and the children in school, it is so easy for us to just push them outside or out of the way. We must remember to throw an occasional toy and an ad ditional hug because this can be such a lonely time for them. All summer long they had the kids to pet and play with them but most of all they had the kids there to tag along with. Also, grooming seems to slack off in the winter months. Keep your animal clean and healthy, read the pet care books to be sure you bathe them properly and do not let them out until they are thoroughly dry and then wait an additional hour or two. Animals are a joy but as everything else, they are work. But if we outweigh the amount of love and friendliness they give us with the work, we see that the love far outshines the work. We ask too, that one individual not write on the same subject more than once each month. We re serve the right to delete any material which we consider libelous or in ob- jectional taste.) BOUQUETS "Dear Editor: "My husband and I were fortunate to be chaperones for the '72 homecoming dance. "The community should be very proud of our young people who attended this dance. They were perfect ladies and gentlemen. I must take this opportunity to compliment them and their parents. "The Student Council and committee did a great job, decorating and planning the dance. I've never seen a nicer one. "Thanks kids, for a delightful evening. "Sincerely, "JoAnn (Mrs. Wm.) Hutchinson" READY, GET SET, GO! ~ Company I of the McHenry Township Fire Protection district conducted school fire drills during Fire Prevention Week just concluded. The scene above is at McHenry Junior high. The fireman in small picture at right is timing youngsters as they hurry from the building. STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD BITTERSWEET Vertical horticulture can be done with Bittersweet. The native American Bittersweet is a good choice for a porch or patio trellis. Its average yearly growth rate is ten feet. Bit tersweet is a twining vine and thus needs a good strong trellis, a fence or tree on which to climb. Yellow-orange berries of Bittersweet are in great demand for fall bouquets. For pollination, a male vine is planted near the female berry producing plant. The male vine is kept pruned to minimum size. THE DAIRY COW The cow is an amazing creature! A dairy cow producing 11,000 pounds of milk, some 5,000 quarts in a year, needs 43 tons of "fuel", according to the USDA. She will eat about 3,925 pounds of grain and protein feed, 4,700 pounds of hay, 3,400 pounds of silage, washed down with 75,045 pounds of water. This means that Bossy eats and drinks an average of 237 pounds per day. All the water she drinks helps her build up some 10 tons of blood she pumps through her udder in a day's time to produce 40 pounds of milk. Imagine having to carry all the feed and water to a cow so she can produce 11,000 pounds of milk a year! That's six tons of feed and more than 37 tons of water for just one cow. A 50- cow milking herd consumes the staggering amount of 1,850 tons per year. That's why modern dairymen substitute motors, levers, push buttons and pipeline milking systems for muscle in the dairy business. Raw Recruit "Your husband has a new suit." "No, he hasn't?" "Well, something's dif ferent." "It's a new husband." MARKET PLACE SHOPPING 4 CENTER spurgeons 4400 W. Rte. ) McHenry IMow! Your favorite polyester dresses in bold jacquards!
