Presenf $400 TB Stipend To Marengo Girl The DuPage-McHenry Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease association reminds high school juniors and seniors that now is not too soon to give thought to preparing for a profession to follow upon graduation. John Kooistra, Woodstock, member of the association's executive committee and an alternate to the state TB group's delegate assembly, said that the TB association is trying to stimulate the interest of young people in the growing field of inhalation therapy, a field which provides treatment for persons having emphysema and other breathing problems. "Last year we awarded a $400 scholarship to Patricia Dahlgren of Marengo," Kooistra said, "and this year, we anticipate a successful Christmas Seal campaign which will make more such stipends available." Miss Dahlgren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Dahlgren of Marengo, currently is at Cook County hospital in Chicago, studying to become an inhalation therapist. She was among six applicants con sidered by the DuPage- McHenry TB association's selection committee. Com mittee members were Dr. Robert P. Foresman, Wood stock; Mrs. Loretta Kohl, RN, nurse for the McHenry TB Care and Treatment board; Mrs. Eileen Hanson, RN, director of nurses for the McHenry County Health department; and Evelyn Williams and Don Carlock of the TB association. The TB association, located at 222 S. Throop street in Woodstock, has information available as to the existing schools which offer training in inhalation therapy. An association spokesman said that enrollments in these schools are usually filled relatively soon each year, and that one must first be accepted by such a school before ap plying for the Christmas Seal stipend. Halloween Stunt Helps Handicapped "Communities,, large and small, are always seeking projects for youth on Halloweeh, and the plan of collecting clothing and housewares for Goodwill In dustries has proved popular in many areas for several years," according to A1 Soldwish, director of community relations for Goodwill of nor thern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. "The "trick or treat" project involving the collection of clothing and housewares, gives the youngsters a feeling of community pride, because they realize they are carrying on something worthwhile instead of vandalistic," Soldwish continued. The "treat" part of the project is usually provided by some adult group in the com munity who furnish the snack for the "tricksters". Sometimes a prize is given to the team and individual bringing in the most materials. In some areas the local theatre operators work out a free picture and use discards as admission. This plan can also keep many youngsters off the streets and out of mischief. The Law Serves You Tax Saving May Lie In Separate Return The husband and wife who file a joint federal income tax return could be paying more tax. than necessary if both are employed, according to the Illinois State Bar Association. For that reason, the ISBA says, now is a good time for couples to take a look at their income situation With a view to possibly filing separate Both plans have been suc cessfully used for over 50 years. According to Soldwish, Goodwill Industries will be glad to furnish bags for this project, and any group interested in this dual plan of "home missionary" work should contact the local representative for Goodwill Industries sup plies. The local representative is Mrs. Nick (Agnes) Adams and the Goodwill truck will be in this area Friday, Oct. 27. Call Mrs. Adams for pickup. The truck will be in Wonder Lake the same day. Normally, the bar group points out, any savings will be on the side of the joint return if one spouse earns substantially more than the other. Thus, it says, if a husband or wife in dividually accounts for more than 65 per cent of tjie family income, it is usually advisable to file a joint return. Since the income tax is on a graduated scale, if the person who earns a predominant amount or all of the family income files a separate return, that person is taxed at a higher rate than he or she would be when filing jointly. In this situation, a joint return has the effect of dividing income between husband and wife with the result that they are taxed at a lower rate. However, if a husband and wife earn about the same amount, and their combined income is between $7,000 and $20,000, the ISBA says, filing separate returns can be ad vantageous, tax-wise. The only way to determine whether a saving can be realized, and how much, is to actually compute the tax return both ways, as though filing jointly and as filing separately, using FARM BUREAU DIRECTORS - Officers of the McHenry County Farm Bureau include two reelected and two new directors. However, once they file a joint return for a certain year, that's final and they cannot later file separate returns for the same period. Couples should take a look at their income situation each year to decide whether to file jointly or separately, since the decision is entirely theirs and should be made in the light of the tax consequences, the ISBA said.
