PAGE 6-PLAINDEALER-FRJDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1972 MCHS "Old-Ti Woodstock Alum Next Sunday Afternoon MCHS Polo Team Ties For 5th In State Finals By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry high school water polo team, coached by Mike Shanahan, tied for fifth place in the state meet. The meet was held last Saturday at Glenbrook North high school. McHenry was one of eight schools invited to participate in the state's first tourney. The local team defeated Deerfield 6 to 5 for their only win. Paul Rogers a senior was nominated for the all tourney team. Other Now, what? The election is over. Guess we are supposed to settle down. Many people favor a shorter campaign with fewer millions spent. President Nixon must have had the right idea. He stayed home to tend the store while others went out into the boondocks to campaign for him. And how about Dan Walker -- he changed the old saying "Creep before you walk" to "Walk before you run". We found some unhappy co workers in the Plaindealer front office Wednesday mor ning. A Democrat walking into that spot feels like a lonely little petunia in an onion patch. No doubt about it some good men fell who had done a good EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS FDITOR 1 job. And some fell who had the potential to do a good job. That's politics. Now that political speeches are over, the next big noise we will hear will be Saturday morning when hunters set forth to bag pheasants, Hungarian partridge, quail and rabbits. This year the shooting starts at sunrise. Ran into some Cub fans who are very disappointed that Johnny Bench was chosen Most Valuable instead of Billy Williams. As A1 Smith used to say, "Let's look at the records".. Bench led the Major Leagues with 40 home runs, drove in 125 runs, and batted .270. schools in the meet were Evanston the winner, Glen brook North, Oak Park, LaGrange, Deerfield, Lockport and Evergreen Park. Twelve boys participated in the sport this season. They were Paul Rogers, Steve Elliott, Randy Koczar> Randy Watkins, Gary Swanson, Bill Stahlman, Jon Sek, Kevin Weiss, Mark Koerber, Andy Hansen, Jim Szamleski, Brian Fetzer, and Bill Meath. This is the first season for the sport. Coach Shanahan and the squad must be commended for their fine showing at the state meet. Williams hit 37 home runs and drove in 122 runs. But, now hear this! Billy had a .333 batting average. Ever a bridesmaid, but never a bride. It must be that like good men, good catchers are hard to find. Next week Dick Allen will be announced as Most Valuable in the American League. Or, will he? When our grandson, Brendan Walsh, was asked why he liked Mr. Espey (Police Chief) so much, he told his father - "He's my friend. He does a lot for me - - and- he looks like Grandpa". With that we sign off. Well the "Old Timers" are at it again. Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. McHenry high school alumni football team will play ^Woodstock's at Woodstock. The game should prove to be very exciting although the caliber of play might not be N.F.L. Woodstock is reported to have a very sophisticated passing attack, and many players who saw college action. Of course McHenry will have its usual array of fine talent, bolstered . by superior coaching! Well at least they'll show up. So please plan to be in attendance, and remember all proceeds go to the individual school's athletic funds. This meeting is a must for all who intend to play in the league this year. We must get the rink assembled and teams picked quickly because all the signs point to a better winter for skating than last year. The rink will be assembled again this year at Freund Athletic field, behind the Ad miral, and plans call for the rink to be longer and narrower than last year. There will be a new schedule of times for hockey this year which will be discussed Monday night. There will again be 3 separate divisions of teams, the Pee Wee's from age 10-13, Junior from 13-18 and Senior division, which this year will be made up of anyone from age 16 and up, depending upon ability. Also, this year each league will have a McHenry team which will be made up of boys from each team within the separate leagues. These teams will 1 Fri.. Sat.. Sun.. 11/10-11/12 represent our town when traveling to other cities. Registration fee will again be $10.00 per boy, this money will be used for better lighting, repair to the rink, new goal nets, and more goalie equip ment. Our present account shows a total of $197.00 so the registration fee is important as this year we are paying all our own bills. We will again need your help to get the work done on our rink. Last year the majority of the work was done by the same few people. This year we must have more cooperation or we'll never get the job done. Anyone who has any questions can call me. Mike By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry high school Warriors finished their season with a record of 2 wins against 6 losses. In conference they were 2 and 5 putting them in a tie for sixth place with Crystal Lake. With a promising group of sophomores returning, the outlook for the 1973 season is good. In the Crystal Ball department I had 20 wins 7 losses and 1 tie for a 740 average. I sure hope to improve on that next season. Oak Park Hotel Snowbugs Our Halloween party Oct. 28, was a big success and the gifts given by some of our local snowmobile merchants were well appreciated. Of course the help of our Snowbug girls always helps. And while thanking our friends we shouldn't forget the property owners. Our boys have started to search for some trails and have a good start. All it takes is a little courtesy and common sense to the fact we need trails away from private homes. As the saying goes, snowmobiles can be loud until you own one and we all know not everyone goes for the sport and we have to keep this in mind. At our Oct. 27 meeting election of new officers took place. President Tom McAuliffe, vice-president Chuck Baehne, Sec. Martha Baehne, Treas. Diana Tnyan. We urge all snowmobile riders to join a snowmobile club in your area. Good snowmobiling andof course "Think Snow"!
